Which carry gun for my wife?

Post by granjack on Mon Aug 22 2011, 21:00

My wife and I have decided she needs a new carry gun (she has a little pearl handled .25 auto her Daddy gave her years ago, but feels like she needs more gun). She liked the Ruger LCR and the S&W Airweights she saw at the gun show last week. I believe she could handle the recoil of a small .38 like that. Sure would like to hear any expert opinion from y'all here. I think a revolver would be better for her, less chance of problems, but which one? What about the .32 H&R magnum in a light revolver? Maybe a Taurus? Help!

I think you already named a couple of good ones. I am sure others will be around to help out more.

My wife loves her Smith 38 with CT grips. I would go with the 38. LCR, smith, Taurus, etc. Have fun shopping

My very small built 17yr old daughter can handle my Glock 19. I started her with a 22, then stepped her up to the 9mm.

She will be the best one to decide. Take her and let her feel several different guns in her hand. The once she narrows it down, see if you can find one that she can try out at a range.

I agree, only your wife can tell which one feels right for her. My wife also has the Smith .38 with CTC and really loves it. Try em all!

Got a S&W 638 for myself a while back. Girlfriend decided she liked it so I let her have it. Only pistols she likes to shoot.

Those little lightweight revos have some significant recoil. If she really likes those consider a smaller caliber like 22 Mag.. You can get one with 8 shots instead of just 5. Another option is a Charter Arms, good little revo with a little more weight to it.. I think Charter Arms still makes the patriot which is a 327 Fed Mag, but will shoot several 32 Caliber loads including the 32 H&R I believe.

Thanks to all for the input. I believe we will have fun shopping for a gun for her, and you never know what I might find for me as well!

I bought my wife a s&w air weight 38, she did not care much for the recoil and heavy trigger. Then I bought a kel tec 32 auto and she liked it a whole lot better.

if you buy her a light revolver in 38 special, make sure and give her a big bottle of Advil to go with it.

Remeber, if you want her to be comfortable with it, she will need to shoot it frequently, and if you want her to shoot it frequently it should not hurt her to shoot it..

As a dealer, I get that question a lot at the gun shows.

My answer is always the same, "In my opinion, the best firearm for you will be the one you feel comfortable shooting".

This is a decision that is best left to her. She needs to go to a shop or the next show (Trade mart Sept. 10 & 11) and handle everything to find what she feels is a "good fit".
Then she needs to ask herself about caliber, it would be good if she could actually shoot the same model/caliber before purchasing, but this is usually not possible without a friend having the same gun.

I know that I did not answer your question, but I will never tell anyone what I think is the "best for them". It's just too personal of a decision.

Regards,

Great info all! Looks like we are going to be going to lots of shows and gun shops...and I really hate that...and if you believe that I've got some ocean front property in Arizona for sale lol . Just have to figure out a way for her to actually shoot whatever she finds that she likes. Anybody have any experience with the .327 magnum in a small handgun? I'm thinking she could practice with the .32 H&R for less recoil and load the .327 for use when the recoil won't matter.
