I be doing the "jiggle and hug"

Post by pinetor on Mon Aug 22, 2011 9:18 pm

So I am up to about 250 rounds through the Dillion Square Deal... One issue is the primers not seating fully. My current practice is the "giggle and hug".

I pull out 10 freshly loaded rounds from the hopper and stand each one on the table. I then giggle the table, and watch for any rounds that wiggle. Those that do not move directly into the storage box and those that do get a fresh "hug" from the dillion at the primer stage ( stage 2). They never fail the giggle test the second time.

I think 2 things are at play:
1) The machine is a little tight, and as I load more and more the system seems to be breaking in and seating primers with less attention.
2) I find if I pause at the neutral point to give the primer device feed a primer properly, it works a lot better than making one smooth stoke passing the neutral point and attempting to force the primer into pocket too fast.

I have had 2 primers flip sideways. I also know that if the primer feeder is moved too fast the internal spring will really pop flipping the primer and bumping powder out at station 3.

any suggestions or comment welcome... I am the nooblet on this

I've had a primer pop when seating, so you will never catch me seating a primer on a loaded round! Even though it was only one in several thousand.....yikes.

Food for thought: Attempting to reseat a primer on a loaded round is very dangerous. Attempting to do so will likely invoke the "Bad JuJu" gods and will probably give you a fine opportunity to work on your insurance deductible. You could check to see if there is an obstruction on the primer seat or are you pushing hard enough to get a full seat on the primer? I have no experience with the SDB, just 550's and a 1050. I will say that being smooth and careful is much more productive than flying through and producing mistakes.

Buy a quantity of the blue dillon ammo boxes. After each loading session drop them into the boxes bullet first. then run your finger over the tops of the primers as they sit in the box. You can feel a high primer in the bunch real easy..

Are you using a smart stand with your press? If not try putting your left on the back of the press while seating with you right..allows for more torque. Never needed this technique with a smart stand..ymmv
