Tuesday's Pawn Shop Pickin' - Part 3 of 3

Post by 22lrfan on Tue Aug 23, 2011 9:25 pm

Picking up 3 in one day makes it a great day, especially with one like this. It's a Winchester 94 Big Bore XTR in .375 Win. It's a top eject so it was made between '83 and '89. I keep looking at it and I can't find any evidence that it has been fired since leaving the factory. The bore is spotless as is the interior of the action, no powder fouling anywhere. None of the screws show any evidence of being removed to clean it. There is zero wear around the muzzle or any of the other edges. There is a small scratch on the rear barrel band and a dent in the checkering on the hand guard. Other than that it looks like it just came out of the box. I think I really got lucky on this one. Now I got to get some ammo so I can shoot this sucker.

I'm going to take the day off and ride around so some of that good luck will rub off. That is a beautiful gun. Will come in handy if you're attacked by a herd of elephants or such (apologies to John Wayne from True Grit). You can't work your magic on it, it's already pristine, so what's your plan for it?

Great looking rifle. My best friend in HS has one. Would have been built earlier than 1983 since it's a top eject, they started selling the XTR Big Bore 94 in 1978 changed to XTR Big Bore Angle Eject in 1983.

I'd like to empty that in to an appropriate target. How many rounds does something like that hold?

You're exactly right. I misread the info on it. The Big Bore's have a separate serial number series than the other 94's. They start with BB and then the number. This one is less than 4000 so I would think it would be an earlier year.

If that had been a marlin you'd have been in a war with me over it. Haha. I'd love to have that caliber in a marlin!

Again, looks great!!

im betting recoil aint that bad...

lets just compare the recoil of the 375 winchester to a few other common calibers...

this is from chuck hawks recoil table necl posted a link to in long guns...

Cartridge (Wb@MV) / Rifle Weight / Recoil energy / Recoil velocity
.375 Win. (220 at 2200) / 7.5 / 17.1 / 12.1
.30-30 Win. (170 at 2200) / 7.5 / 11.0 / 9.7
.30-06 Spfd. (180 at 2700) / 8.0 / 20.3 / 12.8
.35 Whelen (200 at 2675) / 8.0 / 22.6 / 13.5
.444 Marlin (240 at 2400) / 7.5 / 23.3 / 14.2

see, its a baby... Wink
