Bolt face torched

Post by BigDaddyQ on Mon Aug 29, 2011 10:39 pm

I was shooting some old remington 270 loads while hunting and noticed the primers were burning out and torching little holes in my bolt face. I worked up a new load of 150gr. Hornady SST's with IMR powder. I was able to get pretty tight groups out of it but was thinking I may could get tighter if I resurfaced the bolt face. So should I take it all apart and take everything out of it and A. braze it or B. weld new material in and then resurface?

Be careful of heating up the head of a bolt. You might kill the casehardening in the bolt and increase headspace.

So brazing is out looks like spot welding? Or are you thinking new bolt?

If it doesn't prevent normal operation of the rifle. leave it alone.

Unless your heart is set on smoothing the bolt face, I would recommend you follow Doug's advice and leave it alone. If it must be smoothed, then take the rifle to a good gunsmith and have them reface the bolt and reset the barrel if the head space was affected. The gunsmith will check the head space to be sure it's in tolerance. Under no circumstances should you braze or weld on the bolt face. It is a hardened piece of steel and heat will take out the "temper" of the face and the lugs. That is a very danger filled thing. The gun could blow up in your face. We at MSGO need all our members. Don't do something to decrease the membership. Just my $0.02 worth.

Thanks. I just wanted to work on it myself. Been absolutely bored and been wanting to become a gunsmith. Already called ATF and about to start working on my FFL. I have a salaried job that I work on call everyday with 4 days off a month. I haven't been to work in 2 weeks. I usually work about 15 hours a week or so. I am left with plenty of off time to open my own business and have a lot of tools already. I always wanted to do gunsmithing and my dad does a lot of woodworking he has built several stocks for me and really enjoys it. I rebuilt several old cars in the past couple of years and have a 67 plymouth barracuda for sale now, but nobody has any money to buy cars these days. During tight times to make money you gotta offer something that is essential. To me gunsmithing is an essential need. I've spoken with a few gunsmiths and according to them there is no school or certification to get in MS and they all were self taught working on their own guns and they bought a bunch of books.
I'll leave the bolt alone for now. I'm busy loading more 308's.

many good articals on internet on how to bush rem bolt pretty easy to do with right equipment yyou only have around .004 of headspace so if you face off more than that then you will have to set barrel back if not head space will be out gunsmiths will usually charge around 100-125 to bush a rem bolt but for around 150 are so you can call pacific tool and gauge and just buy a better fitting bolt you can check bolt raceway it will probably be around .702 old bolt probably around .695 if yours measures 702 order one made to 7015 and it will be very smooth and cut groups down

Thanks for the post msttophyhunter I was going to bring it by your shop yesterday but your partner told me you are out of town for 2 weeks. Its a weathersby .270 I am pretty sure it would require more removal than .004, I'll probably just leave well enough alone and spend my money on some other guns.
