Straight wall case ?

Post by jsthntn247 on Tue Aug 30, 2011 10:55 pm

Figured I would load some 444 marlin for the first time tonight. I have a 3 die set and thought it consisted of a seater, decapper, and a crimper. After I loaded 18 rounds, 6, 3 shot groups I realized that it was too hard to get the bullets to load straight and I must be doing something wrong. Turns out the crimper is acutally an expander thumbs up. Should I pull the bullets and start over or just try these out. It was hard getting them to load straight so I am sure they have some runout. I took some old brass and got the expander set to just barely open the case rim so I could set a bullet on it now.

Were me I'd pull them just to ease my mind if nothing else.

Pull them and bell the cases slightly to seat easier.

They will probably do all right; however, I would not waste 'em. Pull them, empty the powder, "slightly" bell the case, and reseat.

How far down the case should I bell it and how big? Never seen anyone do it and don't know what to look for.

Only the case mouth is belled/flared. Just the depth of the flare.

Be careful not to flare too much. Then the case will get screwed up going into the seat die.......
