Thursday Morning Retiree Club - 22RF @ 200yrds!!

Post by captain-03 on Thu Sep 01, 2011 5:22 pm

The Thursday Morning retiree club met again this morning on the 200/300 yrd Center Range at Magnolia for a little fun in the shade – under the newly constructed firing line!!

We decided to stretch it out a little this morning and shoot 22RF at 200 yrds!! We had 8 Thursday Morning Retiree Members shoot along with 1 Want –To-Be (Mr. Shoeshooter!! – seems he was able to get the day off).

Here are a few pictures of the event …

Duke getting a little spotting help!!

Grasshopper TRYING to keep them in the black!! Two Bricks of Ammo on the bench – plans to be there for a long time!!

George and Jim – Bet they are talking about somebody – probably me!!

Sid – he sure was quite --- concentrating I guess!!

Jim having fun …

Clifton – this a serious man – sometimes!!

Shoeshooter – got on quick at 200 even after taking his scope off ……….

A look downrange – WHERE ARE THOSE LITTLE TARGETS??

Jim – trying to line his target up with – well, who knows!!

WE HAD A REALLY GOOD TIME THIS MORNING. If you have not tried your 22RF at 200 yrds, you should give it a whirl!!

OK -- we used the 25yrd pistol target since we had a bunch of them ... here is my second target ... did not take a picture of the first one -- shot a 94/1X on the first one ... we shot 3 strings of 10 shots each ....

High score was either 278/6X or 279/6X (I think!!) shot by Tom Sutton. I ended up with a 276/2X ...... the wind was not your friend this morning!! I drifted everything to the right on all three strings!! Seems that when I TRIED to compensate, the darn round went exactly where I aimed ... sometimes you just can't win.

Definitely have to try that! How were you able to see your bullet holes?

We started around 8:30AM or so and could see them using our scopes; provided you cut out the backing of your target stand/backing. As it got later in the morning, the monkeys started jumping around and it got a little more difficult to see the holes. A couple of use also brought out spotting scopes to help ...

I have seen "retirement" and I can't wait. Thanks to all for being nice to this "kid". I had a very good time. 200 yards is FUN. 10 mph wind is NOT fun. Hope to join y'all again someday...like to try some of that 50 yd. stuff.

My first target. The flyer high left came before they filled me in on the "trick" of putting a few rounds in the berm to warm the barrel. We had no sighter rounds once the match began. I had to quickly add more shims to my scope when I first arrived.

Photobucket

A couple pics "scoring":

Photobucket

Photobucket

the X-ring is 1 5/8", the 10-ring 3 1/4".

Captain, I think you're shorting yourself, I don't remember your score, but I'm pretty sure you DID beat me. I shot a 276-5X (89-0, 93-4, 94-1)

Even with a good 60X spotter, many holes were mysteries until we went downrange.

When y'all get tired of shooting all those 100's and need a new challenge...here ya go!

Shoe being a "retiree wanabe"....... Hey, I resemble that..... Smile

Was there enough scope adjustment at 200, or did you guys use special mounts? Man, that target is much easier to score than 100yd 22 F-Class targets....... Smile

That does look FUN..... and the wind will be a BIGGER FACTOR......

Today's photos were provided by the Captain. We hope that we can encourage other retirees to get out to enjoy some shooting, and to inspire those who are not quite there yet that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

It's not the train coming.

Can only speak for myself...this particular rifle has a NON drop-compensated BKL mount that I always shoot with 3 layers of electrical tape on the bottom of the rear mount (Thanks to SGMJody for the tape idea). I just popped the scope off and added a couple more layers. Fired a few rounds into a spot on the berm, adjusted the elevation, and was pretty much on paper. No big deal, really.

I tried to shoot the Kimber the other day out to 200 and did not have enough adjustment .... put another shim under the rear scope mount and was able to get on.

Shot the Winchester 52D today with the first BSA scope I had bought and had no problem taking it out to 200 (actually have some elevation left) ... What I have noticed is that the closer your scope is to the receiver, the less elevation you will need to hit the 200 yrd mark. The scopes on my Kimbers sit HIGH and each of them must be shimmed while the scopes on the Winchester and Remington sit close to the receiver and need NO shims to reach 200 yrds ...

Shoe I can't remember my score - it may have been a 278 ... I do know Tom was 1st, I was 2nd, and you took 3rd ...

The black on these targets do not give you much to aim at out at 200yrds..

Wish I could join ya'll at some time, but I'm still a working slob (still two jobs as of right now). Maybe you can do it on a holiday and have more non-retirees?

Jimbo

From the 100 yard zero setting, I adjusted 15 MOA using CCI Green Tag ammo to get to 200 yard zero.

Hope this helps.

OK! What gives???
The first two targets shown are 50 yard standard outdoor pistol targets but when the pictures show the target line, the targets are 25 yard standard outdoor pistol targets. The scoring rings are the same for both targets but it seems that the 50 yard target would give the shooter more black to zero in on.
