Pawn shop rescue... 45/70 handi rifle

Post by Rw on Thu Sep 01, 2011 6:44 pm

Rescued this a couple of days ago, was going to just clean it up and resell but its growing on me. There were a couple of marks/stains on the stock and since i cant leave anything alone it got whats becoming my favorite stock color... Krylon flat tan. Already picked up a second barrel for it too... a 12ga chambered 3.5". I can see me picking up several more barrels too.

Looks good for sure.

On a side note on the barrel changes for H&R I seem to recall that they have to be factory fitted (barrel to receiver) to ensure correct lockup, headspace etc.

Not trying to rain on your parade but safety first.

I have shot a 12 3.5" handi-rifle and its the real deal on recoil when they first came out I saw several go right back up for sale.

The newer guns like this one have better fit and finish and interchange more readily, this fits perfect. I know how to fit them to the gun if needed.

Got SIL a 45-70, I called and DWLPF they said a 35 wheelen was illegal in primative weapons. Course the next year it was legal. Jest of my question, what year do they need to get the receiver headspace set?

Some guns have to have the barrels fitted, some dont... it all depends on manufacturing tolerances Sid. They have improved things with the newer guns. The shotgun barrel i got today is off a much older gun, but locks up tight on my 2010 or so one.
Primitive weapon season is the main reason i got this thing, also want a 357 and a 44 barrel for plinking and future suppressor hosts

Looks like there have been no changes in frames since 1999. The link above is to H&R site that explains what works with what and barrels available and prices.

I am sure that the fact they want to factory fit a barrel to your receiver is to cover themselves from lawsuits if there was a failure.

A gunsmith can do the same thing they are doing at the factory fitting the barrel or there are DIY guides on the internet to fit them yourself.

I am well aware of whats involved in fitting a barrel to these, ive done my own smith work for quite a while and once i get my ffl i will be doing work for others. I have a fairly extensive background in fabrication and can build just about anything given adequate tools, just dont have the budget for all i need right now. Im perfectly capable of buying a barrel blank and making the rest of the parts to have it fit the handi rifle.

I may not have been clear about the newer receivers, its not so much changes as they have improved production quality.

Cant afford a tc right now, and so far im into this whole setup for less than the cost of one tc barrel since some trading was involved.

With a little time, anyone can fit a barrel. The reciever design has not changed but it really depends on the barrels. I have seen/ owned some that don't require fitting and seen/ owned some that do.

Necks statement isn't entirely true. I have shot an Encore and while I like them more than I did before shooting one, I still love my Handis.
