What 243 Ammo

Post by sand_man on Sat Sep 03, 2011 10:59 am

Give me an idea on the best 243 ammo to start with in my H&R handi. I have to sight it in and don't want to buy more than 2 types. It wil be used mostly for deer and hopefully a few hogs.

I like winchester supreme 95 gr xp3. They will give great penetration and are will shoot some pretty good groups. If you dont handload, find a buddy and handload some barnes triple shocks.

I have had great luck with Fusion ammo in other calibers. It's usually more affordable too. I've yet to connect with my 06, or 308 where they didn't stop dead in their tracks.

My son has killed a number of deer and hogs with his 243 the past few years. The best ammo used was the pointed soft point bullets. The ammo that we liked the lest was loaded with Ballistic tip bullets because there was no blood trail and we lost a couple of well hit animals.

+1 on this,100gr core-lokts have worked great for me the past 21 years, killed my first deer with them and still continue to use them to this day. They've always killed what they shot, shoot less than 1/2" groups in my Rem. 788. Never have like Ballistic tips, they tend to blow apart. Also Nosler Partitions have been one of my favorites in this caliber.

I have shot a lot of deer with my 243 using the Federal 85 grain BTHP.. That round is wicked on whitetails.. The 100 grain BTSP are good option as well.. I want to try the 85 grain Barnes too.

The Winchester Supremes with Combined Technology bullets are great. You may also want to try something loaded with Barnes Triple Shock bullets. Quality bullets will really make up for the lack of weight with the 243 bullets.

Remington Core-lokt 100 gr PSP or Hornady BTSP 100 gr Interlock are two lead tipped factory brands I've had successes with...I roll my own and use 100 gr Nosler Partitions for hunting...I think Federal Premium uses Speer Hot-Core, Nosler Partitions, and Barnes Triple-X in different grain wt. All are excellent choices for hunting.

Ha speakin of corelokts, i sighted in my buddys 788 243 with 100gr corelokts and amazingly it held a perfect 1" group at 100yds. I was amazed. Ive never had a corelokt group anywhere near that well.
