Dyed Laminate Scratch Removal
I bought a Savage .17 from a buddy of mine last week and it has a few scratches in the stock that I would like to remove. They aren't bad, I just like for my stocks to be as perfect as possible. I have read several posts about totally sanding down and re-staining, but I would like to just lightly sand and re-oil without staining. How deep is the dye in the stock and will I hurt it with light sanding? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I could always buy a new stock but that wouldn't be nearly as much fun...

I'd be scared to touch it
You could have the stock "wrapped" by one of forum sponsors

or locally you could use liquid grafix I-55 West Frontage Rd Byram/Jackson

Re: Dyed Laminate Scratch Removal
I'd take it off the rifle, and and using very fine sandpaper sand it, probably wet sanding it to reduce friction. After it's smooth, assuming the color holds (the only real risk I see) which I believe it will. Spray several very thin coats of clear polyurethane on it. Let it dry. Wet sand and buff.
If You screw it up you could then think about having it wrapped or spray it with Krylon but I think you can fix it.
Of course I've got several rifles that look much worse and I just use 'em. So, that's what I'd prolly really do if I were you as well.
You might ought to try to find a trigger guard as well

How deep are the scratches? I've got something that may work.

Scratches are not very deep. I haven't had a chance to try anything yet but I hope to this weekend. -John

PM me if you want to get together and try the stuff I've got. It won't take but 10 minutes.

I'll vouch for 22LRFan (Marty). He really did a job on a .22 I bought from him. Post pics of the process unless it's a trade secret. I got a couple that could use a good scratch removal, just not enough to pay to have it done. I do ok on the metal but no good on the wood.

Re: Dyed Laminate Scratch Removal
Just wanted to give yall an update. I removed the stock and wet sanded it with 600 grit, then 800, then 00 steel wool. I rubbed low gloss tung oil on it from Lowes and buffed it after it sat overnight. I was very pleased with the results. I also wet sanded the barrel with 1000 grit to remove some light scratches from it. The sanding on the barrel took a little of the factory shine off of it, but it looks ten times better than it did when I bought it. I also took the action apart and cleaned everything. Now its time to go shoot!
