209 primers are over kill

Post by Beladran on Sat Sep 10, 2011 5:54 pm

so im sitting here reading about this company that sells breach plug conversion kits for muzzle loaders. Basicly you chop down a 22 hornet case and put a small rifle primer in it, then slip it over the nipple.

why do you wanna do this?? being a encore guy the reason i dont own a ML barrel for mine is they get flyers like crazy. The rumor is the 209 is so powerfull that it lifts the bullet off of the powder charge befor its burnt.. creating pressure issues there for getting flyers.

they had a three shot group from a factory thompson omega with the conversion done shot a 3shot group @100yds that was .35 inchs.. I was impressed!

I converted my old 50 cal smoke pole from older style precussion caps (I forget the #) to 209 primers...never gave me a problem.. it was minute of deer at 100 yards which was good enough.

Main reason I switched was they were easier to find to load while sitting in a tree before dawn...and they obviously threw a little more fire...

Sold it on here a while back...kinda miss the smell of pyrodex every now and then....I don't miss the clean up however

Now my "primative weapon" is a Thompson Prohunter in 35 Whelen...its really not fair Smile

I never had trouble with percussion caps on my T/C Hawkin or Renegade as long as rain wasn't involved and I quit hunting in the rain long before I'd ever considered getting an inline anyway. (I didn't get my Encore until '03.) Seems like enclosed in a closed breach they'd usually stay dry?

I miss hunting with those old muzzleloaders but mainly because most people didn't want to fool with them and sat that season out. I never liked cleaning them. It did feel like more of a challenge though. With everyone having a HandiRifle I'm not gonna handycap myself, I've got a .35Whelen barrel on mine now with a VariX-III 3.5x10x40mm on it. I thought about putting my VariX-III 6.5x20x50mm on it but just haven't felt like fooling with it, ten power is plenty.

Seems like I had some 109 primers at one point are they weaker?

My main issue for converting to the 209's was getting a little more umph...cause I hunt in the pouring rain....I hunt when I have time....I don't get to pick the perfect days
