UPS has lost or stolen my rifle.
Here's the short story:
I dropped the rifle off at my local UPS hub on 01/09/11 destination Ponca City, OK with a EDD of 06/09/11.
The rife was shipped in a hard case inside of a cardboard box with no marking to indicate it contains a firearm.
Rifle shows departing Jackson on: 01/09/11
Rifle shows arriving Mesquite, TX on: 02/09/11
Rifle shows departing Mesquite, TX: one hour later
Rifle shows arriving Oklahoma City, OK on: 02/09/11 here's where the problem starts
rifle never shows departing Oklahoma City so on 06/09/11 which is the expected delivery date I check the tracking number and the rifle still has not moved so I check on 07/09/11 and still no update so now its been 24 hour and the rifle has not been delivered so I call UPS and they start a tracer that will take 5-10 working days and still have no Idea where my rifle is. I have reported it loss and possibly stolen with the Oklahoma City police department. I have the rifle insured for the amount it would cost to replace it but my main concerned is about a rifle Registered in my name being lost or stolen by the UPS and ending up on the streets.

Sounds like you've done all the "filing and reporting" you can do. You've done your part, now all you can do is cross your fingers and wait. Good luck.

I bet it turns up. Just my gut feeling.
In this day & age with all the tracking that goes on, UPS will know exactly who had it last & where it was.
Hope I'm right.

Re: UPS has lost or stolen my rifle.
I see you have reported it to OK police, thats good, but you are required to notify the ATF by filling out a form (number escapes me right now) and calling a hotline within 48 hours of discovery of a loss/theft.
I know it may turn up, but if it doesnt and you notify ATF later, they will not be happy that you did not let them know ASAP.
Personally I would fill out the form and call the hotline number as soon as possible just to cover my backside in case it does NOT turn up.
Just my 2 cents.
For what its worth, I too have had one lost in the system but did turn up a few days later. I just called the ATF hotline back and seems like I filled out some declaration or something to get it off the stolen/lost list. Was pretty painless.
Wish you good luck in finding your gun.
Regards,

I did call the hotline and was told to report it to the local authorities. The operator at ATF made it sound like I was wasting his time.

Re: UPS has lost or stolen my rifle.
Hmmm.
Below is a cut/past from ATF website just for informational purposes.
Report Firearms Theft / Loss
Any Federal Firearms Licensee who has knowledge of the theft or loss of any firearms from their inventory must report such theft or loss within 48 hours of discovery to ATF and to the local law enforcement agency. (Regulations at 27 CFR § 478.39a and implementing section 923(g)(6) require that the report of theft or loss be made by telephone and in writing to ATF).
Upon discovery of any theft or loss of any of your firearms:
1.First, call your local law enforcement agency to report the theft or loss. Contacting the local law enforcement authorities is essential to the quick recovery of firearms taken in a crime. If the firearms are unaccounted for during inventory, you should make it clear to the authorities that there is no evidence of a crime and that the disposition of these firearms is unknown and may stem from a record keeping error.
2.Second, call the ATF’s Stolen Firearms Program Manager toll free at 1-888-930-9275. They can also assist in the preparation of the Theft / Loss Report for submission. ATF will work with the local law enforcement authorities investigating the theft.
3.Third, complete the report form (ATF Form 3310.11) and attach any continuation sheets necessary (ATF Form 3310.11A) and mail it to ATF’s National Tracing Center. Be sure to submit the original form(s) to ATF and retain copies for your records.

Re: UPS has lost or stolen my rifle.
If I'm not mistaken you'll also need a case number from the LE agency that you reported the theft/loss to when filing the ATF form 3310.11.
When UPS learns that there's a gun involved and ATF will soon be involved as well, I'm sure it will turn up.

I bet had you been reporting a white male selling "illegal" guns at a gun show, he'd have been all ears...

I can't tell you how many packages I've had sidetracked at the White Oak hub in Memphis. I think they send about half of all packages that come thru there in the wrong direction. All have eventually gotten where they were supposed to but sometimes it's an adventure.

The shipping time sounds crazy to me. 5 month shipping from Jackson to OK? Shipped 01/09/11 EDD 06/09/11? I guess I am reading it wrong....

I'll ask my UPS guy but they pretty well scan those packages and can tell when it was where. Don't think it was a lone person and it wasn't their first theft. They'll see a pattern.
He's using Day/Month/Year format, GunAddict.
