recovered some lead from stump

Post by Beladran on Mon Sep 12, 2011 4:36 pm

well kinda like the title says.. look below

these were recovered from the rotten pine stump out of my dads snub357 aka "POS Pistol"
the only one with ANY tip deformation is really the third one on the left. I am really suprised at how little damage has been done to these boolits.. 5.0gr of N350 aint exactly max for 38spl but aint no poo poo load.. these were cast at 16bhn aka hardball, and had less than two inches of penetration on the stump not counting the 3/4inch old rotten bark.. and by saying rotton stump i mean rotten, bugs/elements been working on this stump for two years prolly. My question is does FPS drop that much in a snub??. should you use a faster powder like bullseye to get a more complete burn in a shorter length??

All things equal, a longer barrel will generate a higher FPS, as to how much higher, I'm not exactly sure.

As for the other parts of your question, I'm to green to reloading to even venture a guess.

One benefit to that POS Gun, is you can reuse the lead, just have to dig it out of the stump.

there was about 30 in the stump out of 300 rounds lol

im honestly just blown away. i have recovered fmj 38spl rounds with better deformation than these! I would load some +p 38spl with bullseye and try again but i aint shooting that dang revo again.

I've done this before myself. 6-12 rounds of .38 a day will get rid of a pine stump pretty fast, then dig up the projectiles.

i have a document of some chrono work i did with some 357 reloads. i tried to attach it here but it wouldn't fit, so i'll break it down.

All was in 357 mag loadings. I used a 4" GP 100 and a 2 1/4" SP 101. Two different powders, Titegroup and Acc #5, and 8 different bullet/powder combo's, including jacket and LSWC. The average difference showed a slower speed of 7.75% in the 2 1/4".
