From MY personal experience (I have been in the desert and carried an M9). You have to clean your weapons daily. Anyone who has been there will tell you that in the Desert all weapons get caked with sand. It would get to the point with the Berretas and M-4's that you couldnt even charge the weapons. And we did lube them, we cleaned and lubed with CLP. Also, in the desert (he may be talking about home station) we didnt worry about the arms room because we never turned our weapons in, they stayed with us 24/7. We actually had to keep our weapon of last resort (On tanks) the M4 wrapped in plastic in the turret because if we didnt it would get so caked with sand it wouldnt even fire. With the M2 if it wasnt cleaned OFTEN that big bad 50 would turn into an ineffective single shot. So we TC's cleaned it whenever we had down time and in between engagements we would shoot it with a few shots of CLP to keep it firing properly. Anyway, here's the vid.

Now they have dry lube. CLP and LSA almost create more problems in the desert. Without LSA MK19s will not fire more than one round and as soon as you coat one with it the dirt will stick. We would coat all the mating surfaces and then wipe everything down as much as possible. M9s are garbage anyway, they are more effective being thrown then fired. The dry spray lube will work better than anything over there but it is hard to come by.

I agree, the day we turned in our 1911's, drew the M9 and went to the range everyone was bummed.
