A New Ruger SP101 .22lr

Post by Muleskinner on Thu Sep 15, 2011 11:24 pm

Just got an email from Ruger... check it out.

http://www.ruger.com/products/sp101/models.html

Hope they will make one in .22 magnum soon... I don't think I could resist that!

SO the .22 LR is heavier and cost more than both the .357 mag and the .38

True. If they threw in both cylinders for LR or Mag, I'd like it but that's a chunk of change. Last your grandkids lifetimes though.

Hmmmm... your right. Longer barrel and less material machined from the cylinder for smaller cartridges, maybe? I dunno!

Before you buy a .22 magnum handgun, consider this: The powder used in .22 Magnum RF ammo is made for use in rifles and handguns do not achieve the higher velocities in their short barrels. I have chronographed both loads in my Ruger Single Six and the velocity is nearly the same.

I have a Ruger Single Six with both .22 LR and .22 magnum cylinders. I have not shot the magnum and not shot the LR much.

But word is that these dual rated .22s are not as accurate with the LR possibly because the barrel inside diameter is slightly larger to accommodate the magnum. I have no idea if it's true.

They also say that magnum ammo has low quality control and varies a lots.

Bout time they released a 22 sp101. I've had a convertible cylinder single six since I was 13 and I've got lord knows how many rounds through that pistol. It's just as accurate now as it was when I got it, granted im probably a bit more accurate than I used to be. Never notice any kind of accuracy difference between the magnum ad lr cylinders.

I would rather have an older S&W Model 17. Made about 1970.

Mr. Doug, in fun, I have a hypothetical question for you. If modern technology got so far advanced that it could create a time machine to take you back in time about 50 years, what would you do? Could you lower your standards enough to use the newfangled technological advancement to get you back to when things were made the way you loved? Study on that one for a while. lol

I asked my dad the same question.........he still ain't answered me. I think I overheated his brain with that one. Razz

I was looking through the Ruger catalog today at the gp100's. I looked at the sp101's and noticed this new addition. I have been wanting a 22 revolver for a while. Anybody know anyone that has gotten one yet?
