Alliant Black MZ powder

Post by doggoner on Fri Sep 16, 2011 3:59 pm

Has anyone tried this powder? It a new "smokeless???" black powder replacement. I just heard about it on the Guns and Ammo show on the sportsman channel this afternoon. Didn't catch the whole blurb but from what I did see it burns fairly clean. It's suppose to be fairly unaffected by moisture.

This is a link to Alliant powder's press release about the powder.

A little more research on the Modern Muzzle Loaders forum shows a BIG thumbs down on this powder. The person testing the powder took his VERY accurate 45 cal muzzle loader rifle and his first group was about a 6" or so effort. This from a gun he says groups in an inch with BH 209 powder. He upped his charge from 100 gr to 110 gr by volume and in a three shot group, only one bullet hit the target. He had another shooter using a different rifle shoot the powder. Same results or worse. I won't be buying any of this powder. The guies on Guns and Ammo are just makeing a buck by endorsing the stuff. The reviewer did say it shot clean for black powder replacement though FWIW. I'll stick with my pyrodex until it's gone and try some BH 209.
