gave my nephews and son about an hour or gun training

Post by butch86 on Fri Sep 16, 2011 11:50 pm

i took about an hour and got out a toy rifle and the ruger 10/22 today. 2 of my nephews were here and my son was begging to shoot the 22. we went on the porch and had a lil class on gun saftey and handeling. its a good thing to hear your 4yo son and 5yo nephew asking me "why do we shoot the target if its not alive?" this comes from me drilling them that we do not point a gun at anything we do not want to destroy or kill. i love teaching these kids about shooting and safety. right now with them being 4, 5, and 9 years old i spend alot of our time on safe handeling and placement of the gun. my 2 nephews have the hardest time keeping there fingers off of the trigger nomatter how much i drill them about it. i popped the oldest one on the hand for putting the finger on the trigger and i had no more trouble out of him. he got a lil upset because it was a toy rifle and not the real one. at least it wasnt the loaded real gun.

Treating toy guns like the real thing is the way to go. Poor gun handling is easily transmitted between the two and more often than not it ends up happening at REALLY bad times with the real thing. Good on you for starting them early.

If everyone did that, we'd have a whole lot less kids shooting themselves or other kids with "unloaded" guns they just happened to find in the babies' momma's hiding place. Took mine out and seeing what a firearm will do beats preaching to them every night. Told them if they ever wanted to go shooting, I'd get one out of the safe and we'd go. Both are grown and carry.

Taught mine young too. Took them shooting with me and showed them how they work. Never had a moments trouble out of any of them when it came to my guns. I heard my oldest boy tell his friend that no one touches Daddy's guns without asking first.

Best home safety lesson. You demystify firearms and make them second nature. Then they won't try to sneak around to check out the gun in the closet.

i got out the mosin 91/30 this morning and shot a few things ie gallon plastic jug of water, a gord we found growin on the fence, and a peice of firewood. i wanted to drive home that guns are dangerous and never point at anything you do not intend to destroy. ( the gallon jug i filled about half way and put 8 mre heaters in it just for the explosion effect) my son was the only one asking to shoot the 91/30. i told him maybe in 10 years ha ha. he gets toy guns and the 22 when dad takes him out shooting.

they wanted to know how i blew up that water jug. i have to say if i was 5 or 6 i would have thought that was cool as hell too. i am 35 and it was still a great affect. pritty cool deal to show youngins that guns are dangerous first and formost, but with proper handeling and following the saftey rules and adult supervision they can be fun too.
