Does the IBM need rehab?
Can someone tell me....are these sights legal for a CMP match? The front sight "guards" have been ground off and someone has told me that the PMC rear sight was not the original military sight.
If I need to replace these sights, can someone recommend a source? Do I need a gunsmith to replace the front sight?
Here are photos of the sights:

Rear sight looks OK for HP at Magnolia. Someone did a FUBAR on the front sight. Why someone would remove the ears on the front sight and still use peep rear sights is beyond what my little brain can handle.....
YES, replace the front sight with mil-spec.

Where's the best source for a front sight? Is this something that a gunsmith needs to do or is it a DIY type job?

I'd say it's a DIY job. It's easy enough to replace it. These guys have most anything you would need.inthe10ring wrote:SubGunFan wrote:YES, replace the front sight with mil-spec.

Re: Does the IBM need rehab?
Well, I replaced the front sight with the one I bought from Fulton (thanks for the link, M1GF). New front sight installed easily; old front sight was a booger to remove!!!
I shot the carbine yesterday at Magnolia (for the first time in 30 years). It grouped decently (for this shooter!), but the rifle shoots 12+ inches high at 100 yards (from BR, sandbag), shooting factory ammo (can't remember the brand at the moment; only box available at Van's). I can't adjust the rear sight any more to lower the POI.
The sight available from Fulton's looks like my current sight. (http://www.fulton-armory.com/rearsightcompleteadjustable2.aspx) So, not sure another sight would do any better.
Any suggestions? Lower velocity ammo? Different sight?

Does your sight blade look as high as the one on Fulton's website? If so all I can say is you're sight picture is bad off or the barrel is bent.

It does look the same height. I THINK (and I mean "think") my sight picture is accurate (99% confident).
Dang! Hope the barrel isn't bent! I didn't think about something that serious. Thanks.

Bring it to the CMP match on 10/15 and we'll take a look at it.

I would take the sight to a Meg welder and have some additional height added to the front sight. Dress it off and file to zero. If it shoots to the left, move the front sight to the right.

what Doug said
Keep in mind these are battle rifles..and old ones at that...not tack drivers...I've had to build up a couple front sights on 1903s to get em to shoot decent at 100...

No.... not what Doug said (some of it)........ If a gun is shooting/hitting to the left, move the FRONT sight to the LEFT. Or move the REAR sight to the RIGHT.
