Heavy loads for 45ACP

Post by tek4260 on Wed Sep 21, 2011 9:27 pm

Anyone here have any experience with heavy boolits in the 45ACP? I am about to try some 255 Lee RNFP's and maybe some Cast Performance 265 WFNGC's in my Springer.

Threads like these got me thinking of this

In the old days some guys were using 250gr for bowling pin matches. I don't know what loads they were using......

I'm not really looking for hot rod levels. I actually have some loads for them in an old set of PO Ackley books. Unique I believe. I have some Universal which should interchange. I am thinking of a deer load that duplicates a standard 45 Colt, or is at least close. My Springfield already has a heavy mainspring, buff, full length guide rod, and a "take your breath away" trigger. Plus, somewhat decent sights.

One that you wouldn't mind beating on. Now if it was a Colt or a Kimber, I'd stay away from the heavy boolit loads.

I would rather beat on a plastic buffer pad than the metal frame

255 grain rnfp sized .452 over 5 grains of Bullseye gives a touch over 850 fps in my 5" series 70 and also in my springfield. It's accurate and hits like the old 45 Colt. I know it will shoot through and through a 200lb hog. A couple of friends and I have been shooting this load for years. It gives .45 colt performance in a government model. Hope this helps.

Just a note those shock buffs cause more problems then thay are worth. The 1911 does not need them at all. If you are battering the frame you need a stiffer recoil spring. I have found that the stock 16lb spring works perfect for any standard power ammo. You can go to a 18lb for +p loads but not really needed until you really push the envelope. Also don't forget the main hammer spring also slows down the slide and delays slide movement.
The thing with the buffers is they shorten the stroke of the slide and can cause stovepipes and other feed problems. Also in a properly tuned 1911 the slide just barley kisses the vertical impact surface. With the buffer it is now slamming into it. Also the buffer get beat up quick and can jam the gun up when they come apart.
