desoto range

Post by mcb2ms on Thu Sep 22, 2011 7:39 pm

New to the Biloxi area from Phoenix. I'm used to going out with the guys in the desert for some rimfire competition practice. I understand thats not real practical here but I keep seeing some reference to a public range in the desoto near Wiggins. However I can't find any maps or directions? Any thoughts on a safe place to go shoot without having to deal with a $100 club fee like Pascagoula. Not that thats a bad thing, just not in the budget right now. We moved here to Gautier about a month ago and the trigger fingers starting to itch.

The area to which you are referring is marked on this map as Black Creek Shooting Range. The GPS coordinates are there and you can zoom in pretty close to see just where it is. It's definitely nothing fancy. There is a single, long table and bench and the range goes out a little over 100 yards. Free to anyone. I suppose it's maintained by the forrestry service, but I've never seen anyone out there in an official capacity. It's isolated about three miles down a gravel road and usually not very many shooters there. (I usually go during the middle of the day on weekdays so it may be more heavily used on weekends.) I've met nothing but good, courteous people there.

By the way, I'm new here, so it wouldn't let me post the clickable link. Just copy and paste into your browser, but take the space out after the colon. Smile

Welcome to MSGO. There is a Fclass 22RF shoot this Saturday and every 4th Saturday of the month at the Pearlington range. This is a 100 yrd shoot. You can get all the rules for the shoot at the F Class-.22Rimfire thread under the Comp.Shooting/Firearms Training/Area Shoots Threads or click on the Sticky at the top of this thread's heading. Either will take you to the right place.

Directions to the Pearlington range- Take I-10 west to exit #2. Exit and turn left (or south) and go ~ .8 miles. There is an iron gate on the east side (the left side) of the road. Take the dirt road and the range is on the right. Talk to GunOneDown aka Gunny. He ramrods the shoots and is as nice a person as you'll ever meet. He'll help you as much as he can and I assure you the entire gang will welcome you. They are a very nice bunch of folks. I speak from personal experience.

Again, welcome to MSGO and Mississippi. I hope to see you at the shoot Saturday.

P.S. I did a little research and found directions to the range. It's called Black Creek Shooting Range and is near Brooklyn,MS. Go to the General Firearms Discussion thread and click on page 14 yes it's that old. Shooting range at Brooklyn? is the thread you want to read. It's dated 1 Jan 2011 by CSeawell. Good Luck finding it.

It's run by the forest service. DeSoto District Ranges, US Forest Service, P.O. Box 248, Wiggins, MS 39577.
Phone: 601-928-4422
You can call them and get directions.

Thanks guys, that will help a bunch. My friends and I back in arizona had set up an on going scored competition. We had several versions of strings with clays on rebar holders & swingers. When I left there was about 10 of us most weekends shooting for bragging rights. We all shot rimfire, 5 strings each pistol and then rifle. Scored for time and hits. Lots of fun.
When I knew a few months back I would be transferring here with the VA I started researching shooting opportunities and noticed F-Class was popular here. Thats a little out of our class right now as my son and I both shoot tactical style rimfire. A Tapco 1022 and a S&W 1522. But, I am looking into this F-Class once all the finances settle from the move. Really like the Sako Quad built on an XLR Industries Evolution frame.

Little pricey but I can dream, right?
