Long range .308 load?
What are y'all loading for the 600yd+ shots? Right now I have the 168SMK in front of 44gns of Varget with a mag primer, who would that fare? Thanks for the input.

Let me know when you get a load worked up. We'll head to my range.

Re: Long range .308 load?
Im using 43 or 44gr varget, lapua brass, cci br4, pulled 175gr smk. In a bone stock R700 AAC-SD. I got 3rd place last fclass match i went too. So they shoot decent.
Heres first 2 rounds at 600yds. Was checking zero friday before a match.

Re: Long range .308 load?
I have this summer come up with a one that is working well in my 700 AAC you may want to try . It consists of 42.0 gr. of RE-15 behind a 168 SMK with a standard winchester primer seated 2.800 and are running on avg over a 40 shot string of 2740 fps. They produced this 600yd, 20 shot, practice, 173 spread early on a calm morning in August. The group circled on the left side was my last five record shots. I also had used Varget with good results though it seemed to be less consistant for me for some reason.
I have shot nothing but 168 SMKs since I have had this rifle with a bunch of different powders and weights and this one seems to work best for me in this short barrel. Good luck.

Re: Long range .308 load?
I used 43.1 gr Varget over a 175SMK for the match yesterday so I figure more powder pushing a lighter bullet has to be better, right?
I didn't score so well, but I had 13 X's! Those X's are what is addictive!!!!!

I shot some imr in some classic loads, don't remember any weights right off hand, but they actually shot tighter groups in a round robin experiment than did RE15 though they were not as close to point of aim.

Re: Long range .308 load?
I don't remember seeing any references that recommended magnum primers for .308 reloads-- that means squat; I'm just mentioning it.
I ascending order, I found 168 SMK's to be last on my list; better was the Nosler 168 J4, but for true "600+" work, neither are any good against 175 SMK's and if ya want Cadillac accuracy, you should test the Hornady 178 AMAX. Limiting my budget to "affordable" bullets stopped me from trying Berger and the like; I stopped where "my skill" seemed to pace acceptable cost, at the AMAX. I got 10-15% tighter groups with the AMAX over the 175 SMK. Two Rem700's, a Savage 10FP, and a Super Match M1A all came to the same preference.
My load for 600+ was:
178 AMAX
Lapua brass (or Lake City if you've got the prep time)
42.3 RL-15 (or 42.5 of IMR 4064)
Federal 210 GM primers
I got even better accuracy with CCI Benchrest primer--but it wasn't worth the extra expense to me--prolly only another 3-6% accuracy over the load above, and I wasn't shooting for benchrest scores.

Re: Long range .308 load?
Out of my Rem 700 5r Milspec I shoot a 175 grain SMK with 42 gr of Varget (2,450 fps). I seat the bullet 0.02" off the lands and groves, use Lapua brass and CCI BR-2 primers. I'm new to F-Class shooting but shot 29 X's over two days during the LA State Match last weekend. I feel the gun/load combination could do much better, but unfortunately I'm currently the limiting factor. Good luck.
