Long Range Shooters I need some help

Post by Dock Rocker on Fri Sep 23, 2011 10:43 am

Guys,

I have decided to take the plunge into the long range rife world. I found a great deal on a Savage 10 PC. It is pretty ugly with the digital camo stock but that is easy enough to fix. I am going to pay for the gun and sell off some other stuff to fund glass and accessories. Can you guys make some recommendations for rings, mounts and scope? I am a newbie to this so be nice. Budget for Glass, Rings, Mount and bi-pod is about $1000 if that helps.

You are very close to a Nightforce Benchrest budget. Mildot and X-ring know somebody in LA that can (or could last year) get these. Buy once and cry once.

I got mine (Nightforce BR) for 1250.00 If you can spring for the extra bucks, you WILL NOT be sorry.
Ask X-Ring the guys name to call at Sport Optics

I threw money in a Folgers can for a year.

I use the NF BR scope and you will really like it. If that is out of your range for now and you cant wait, Sightron makes some nice scopes for under $1000.

I shoot a Bushnell Elite 6500 4.5-30x50. It's also a 30mm. It would get you well inside your budget.

I like to use a Seekins 20 MOA base and Badger rings. I agree with the other poster on a Nightforce I love mine, but if I were looking for a budget scope just to get by with till I had the coin to get some quality glass I'd check out the Weavers Tactical 4-20x50mm or Bushnell elite 6500 4.5-30x50mm both run about $700.00 leaving you plenty of coin for a quality base and rings.

Nikon has a new model of their Monarck scope out this year. It is a 8-32x50mm 1' tube with fine crosshair target dot side focus. I have one and really like it. MSRP is around $699.00. My scope performed very well at the F-Class match at Bogue Chitto yesterday but I didn't.

Jay made us some sweet deals, free shipping and no sales tax to ship to MS.
I shot a Bushnell Tactical Elite for a few years in F/TR not a bad scope and tracked well.
I shoot the Nightforce 12-42 BR now.
Sports Optics carries several other brands as well, whichever you decide on before you buy
call Jay and see what kind of deal he can make you.

Thanks for the input guys. Keep it coming. Got the gun home last night. Just as I expected the digital camo on the savage pc is fugly as all get out. It will see a can of paint soon.

I am still trying to get the actual needs I have for the scope figured out. I would like to have a scope I could regularly shoot to 600 yards and stretch to 1k if needed. What scope magnification should I look to for those ranges? I know I am going with a mil mil setup and I obviously want exposed turents.

I could easily see the spotters and scoring rings at 600 yesterday with my 30x Bushnell.

I have a savage model 10 fcp which is similar to your gun. I have standard leupod rings and bases and a redfield 4 x 12 scope on it. It's not really set up for long range, but it will make 1 hole with 3 shots at 200 yds. I know that's not saying a lot, but you definitely have a fine gun to start with!

If you think you will shoot at greater than 600 yards, I would not get anything with a top magnification in less than 25x.
But, believe me a 12-42 NF will make it much easier seeing down the range.

I currently shoot X-Rings ole Bushnell 4200 24X 50mm scope...it aint bad for the money...The 4200's have been discontinued but can still be found

I cannot make out the X ring on a F class target on 24 X with my eyes..can barely see the lines in scoring rings...and only if there is no mirrage....that don't happen often

I'd recommend 12-42x56 BR not the NXS (mil-dots too busy) from Nightforce...Think mine is finally gonna get here...but Sportoptics has em in stock. NP-2DD is a popular reticle for F class....its personal preference

Do it right the first time

Get the NF rings and bases while you are at it...only a few hundred more

Now hard part is picking out a reticle

One more thing

Read up on the rules...If you decide you wanted to shoot Field Precision Rifle for some reason...there is a magnification restriction there....think its 25X...just going off my old memory

None in Open class where the big boys play or in F/TR where us mere mortals reside

At ours at Palo you can have a higher power scope, but can't have it on higher than 25x. Y'all's might be the same.
