Night vision optics

Post by SilentHitz on Sat Sep 24, 2011 10:55 pm

Want some feedback from actual users. Got a few sites bookmarked, and have been reading up some...last night vision scope I had was a decade ago ( added like 8 lbs to the weapon LOL). Just looking for something for power outages, not military grade stuff.

Can't decide whether I wanna go with goggles, weapon scope, or both. Scope would have to be versatile enough to go on an AR, and a Ruger #1 in 30/06. I've seen the 10k stuff and that's WAY outta my budget! Can go 2, maybe 3k on a scope...maybe 1k on goggles. Can't do the handheld stuff as I am in a wheelchair. Any feedback, good or bad, much appreciated.

If I had the money, I'd go with a good set of gen 3 goggles, and that way you can use to shoot with an Eotech NV compatible holo sight, or just look around the house or yard when the power's out. You might spook the neighbors waving around an AR with a dedicated NV scope on it Smile.

Yea, the more I think about it the more I lean toward the goggles...no need to hold anything while rolling around, and I really don't want to add a lot of weight to the weapon.
I'll have to look into the Eotech, never owned one, but I have looked thru one of my brother's and liked it. Didn't know they had a NV compatible model...thanks for the info.

I'm not even quite sure how the NV compatible models work, but I think they just use a super dim dot while in the night vision mode. I looked at one, and when it was in NV compatible mode I couldn't see a dot at all, so I guess that would make sense. A regular dot would probably look like the sun through a good pair of goggles.

Yea I been checkin' out the thermal stuff too...all I can do is drool at that. LOL Decided on the goggles, but still researching brands, and what generation I wanna flip the bucks for. 3rd is supposed to have longer tube life, but not sure I wanna go that expensive for what I want one for...decisions, decisions.

+1

Those thermal hog hunts that Jager Pro puts on youtube are incredible.

Have you considered a Day/Night system like the ATN PS40-3 kits or PS22-3 kits.

I did look at those Stryker, nice but if I have to lay the weapon in my lap to roll around...I'm in the dark again. For my circumstances, I think the goggles are the best way to go. They do have some sweet scopes out there though...I like the day/night kit w/ Trijicon. Can't afford both right now...my printing press is broke LOL

NVG take a little time to get use to they will cause you to have a limited or lack of depth perception everything will kinda looks flat and object will have a shadowing affect at long distances, you can also catch white out from heavy muzzle flash in an enclosed area like a room or hallway.

Inside flash WOULD a b1tch, not really planning on using them inside during a complete blackout. Have a coleman lantern and other light, I wanna see what's lurking outside...and deal with it BEFORE hand.

I know it's gonna take some time to get used to something hanging on front of my face, but it won't take that long. My sister might try and have me committed to the nut ward at the VA, but I can turn everything off and roll around the apt. till I get used to them. Reminds her of the nut from Silence of the Lambs. funny
