Mailing a handgun
I searched online and the site to find some answers but got nothing but more confuse. I was told I could ship a handgun through USPS to an FFL for transfer but I had to go to a certain PO in Gautier MS though I live in Moss Point.
What are the rules on shipping pistols? or clear rules, lol
Thanks in advance

Re: Mailing a handgun
USPS won't mail handguns without a license and only under certain circumstances:
http://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c4_009.htm
UPS will ship handguns to an FFL but requires next day air:
http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/resources/ship/packaging/guidelines/firearms.html?srch_pos=3&srch_phr=handgun
This decision was a policy decision on UPS's part and not required by law, made in 1999:
http://www.pressroom.ups.com/Press+Releases/Historic/1999/Q4/A+Notice+on+Handgun+Shipments+...?srch_pos=1&srch_phr=handgun
FedEx will also ship a handgun from an individual to an FFL (and back). I could have sworn that they also required overnight service, but I don't see that here. I might not have looked far enough though:

I sent my Kel-tec p-11 back to the manufacturer once for warranty work, just went to the fedex place with it in an appropriate size cardboard box with the address and $$ and insured it... off she went. I don't think she asked me what the package was, if they do, I believe u just say "machine parts".

DO NOT USE GAUTIER POST OFFICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They are the most incompitant(sp.) Post Office in the world. They have lost numerous packages that I have sent. The tracking numbers would show that the packages never left Gautier. Then after a month or so I would receive the packages in my mail bucket marked undeliverable due to time expiration.??? And some were opened and resealed.

I tried to ship a handgun through FEDEX last year. I was told it would have to go overnight, be completely broken down and they would have to see it and I would have to pack it in front of them and I think the cost was something like $90.

I think somebody my be feeding you a line of BS about the gun having to be completely broken down and packed in the store. This may only apply to individuals not FFLs. I'm not sure.
ALL handguns must be shipped overnight. This is a AFT regulation if I'm not mistaken. Shipping overnight reduces the risk of sticky fingers finding your package.

That's why you should print out a copy of their policy on shippng firearms and take it with you, because 99.99999% of the time the person you deal with has no idea what they are talking about.

"Machine parts" or "tooling prototypes" are suggested all over the web, but federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm. Not to mention the potential problems that could arise if you have a damage/insurance claim on your "machine parts". See the ATF regs here:

I don't see it required anywhere in the regs and as it appears from the link in my prior post, UPS did it as a policy decision on their part, ostensibly for the reason you suggest (reduces the risk of the package getting "lost").

Re: Mailing a handgun
Overnight is a Carrier policy, not federal law. They just state it must be shipped by contract carrier. Now, It may be cheaper in the long run to have your favorite FFL ship your package for you. They can use USPS, and ship to another FFL.
Warranty and repair work can be shipped by YOU to the repair shop and returned to you. Most companys will send a Fex Ex call tag for your package.

Re: Mailing a handgun
Just shipped two handguns to Ar via UPS in one box. Had to ship them next day air even though there is no air service from Vicksburg to Berryville, AR. The UPS terminal required an open box for their inspection. One handgun was assembled, one was field stripped.
The field stripped handgun was in clear bubble wrap, easy for them to see. Other handgun was wrapped in three clean diapers. They were unwilling to touch that one. The manager at the UPS terminal wanted to see my MPL. That was really no business of his, but anything to get the package out.
Treated me a lot like a drug dealer. Shipping a handgun is a pain. Gunsmith returned handguns to my home address via UPS 2nd day air (go figure!).

Scott, I guess we ain't the stupidest people on the forum. I don't know the answer and no one has spoken up. Their silence shouts loudly that they don't know either.
