Air Rifles for 4-H Competition
Does anyone have any experience with the 4-H air rifle competitions?
What are the typical brands and models that you see used in the 4-H competitions? I was fairly pleased with the Daisy 747 pistol; I'm looking for a rifle that is roughly equivalent in price, quality, capabilities, etc. There seem to be soooooo many out there to choose from.
These will be used mostly by 12-18 year olds.
Thanks

Re: Air Rifles for 4-H Competition
I have been a range officer for several National Match 3 position air rifle Championships. The rifles that usually win the matches are the daisy Avanti 888 and 887. The 887 is a better rifle because it has superior sights and stock. These are CO2 rifles and you will need a CO2 tank that has a siphon tube to retrieve the liquid off the bottom of the tank.
Call Daisy and you can get a 4H price from them for thes rifles. I would be sure to buy the 887.

The 888 has the really cheap sight set and a low comb stock. Try Daisy for the 887. I would not buy the lever cocking pneumatic rifles. It is very difficult not to break position when operating the lever. It is very difficult to learn this procedure. Daisy will give 4HY shooting clubs a discount

Thanks! I have Daisy's catalog for instructors. Looks like it's around $305.00 each.

The difference in the sights is worth $50 and the stock is much better.

The CO2 tank and cyl sounds like a pain...I've been wanting a decent air rifle for backyard practice and just hate the break open spring rifles...all the triggers suck etc etc...
The whole CO2 thing is still a bit of a mystery to me...How much trouble is it? Do your shots vary in velosity as the co2 level in the gun goes down?

'Neck,
I'll let Mr. Bowser speak to the rifle. I was introduced to the Morini pistols during some recent training. (check out http://www.morini.ch/)
The one I shot had an electronic trigger and a regulator to ensure that you had the same pressure on each shot (for up to about 100 shots, I was told). Truly, it was a pleasure to shoot...and should have been for the price tag!!!!

Neck,
With the Daisy 887, you can get 80-100 shots with a full CO2 cylinder. Compressed air rifles are available but they cost twice as much and the scuba tanks don't last as long as the CO2 tank. If you are not going to shoot in 3 position competition, a used Daisy (but rebuilt) 753-853 pneumatic one pump air rifle is available from the CMP for a small amount. The CO2 rifle has the better feature of not forcing the shooter to break position to load the rifle. Look at air rifles on the CMP sales page.

Re: Air Rifles for 4-H Competition
Most of the break open's I've seen...I just hate the "thud" you get when the spring lets go...plus they make a good bit of noise...I've never picked one up that did not have a 50 lb trigger pull either...so these Daisies are the cats meow...?
I'm interested in rifles only...not gonna compete with it...would put a optic on it to get some cheap rifle trigger time with a pellet trap in back yard...maybe bust a tree rat or two

Re: Air Rifles for 4-H Competition
The 888-887 have a trigger adjustment screw behind the trigger guard. Buy a longer screw and cock the bolt. turn the screw in until the rifle fires. Then turn the scerw out 1/4 turn. Not a bad trigger.
The 888-887 have a Lothar Walther barrel and are capable of hitting the 10 ring at 10 meters, with every shot. The 10 ring is a dot. Of course it is better to use RWS pellets in lieu of Daisy and Crossman. WE buy RWS Hobby and Meister-kugen pellets from Pyramyd Air.
