Budget Rifle Build....Follow my progress

Post by Dock Rocker on Fri Sep 30, 2011 5:26 am

One of the perks of being a dealer is every so often a vender calls up trying to get rid of inventory they over bought. In this case they had a great deal on the Savage Precision Carbine. I got the call from Jay about the gun and did some quick research and thought it would make a great platform to build off of. I was really in the market for a 700 action Remington AAC edition, but they are not easy to find right now.

At first glance the Accustock is great but it is FUGLY! It will get a chance to meet a spray can really soon. The action felt great out of the box, and the trigger is what sold me on it. I am not really thrilled about the blade that must be depressed on the trigger before you can fire it (think glock and SD) but the trigger is at 2.4 lbs from the factory and breaks great, no creep.

I have already made the first mod to the gun. Anyone that knows me knows I dont like a loud gun, and this one is no exception. The plan is for a Advanced Armament 7.62 can for this gun. This gun will also double as a demo gun so that we can show off AAC's products. Had the smith turn me out a knurled blank to keep the threads protected until I get the QD flash hider from AAC

I am still trying to work out the details for the scope, base, rings and bi-pod. I will most likely do a TPS 20 MOA base (if i can find someone that has them is stock). I am still trying to figure the rest of the details out. I am going to shoot as many different scopes as I can get my hands on to try to sort out the magnification I want. I really like the ability to stretch out to the 25X when shooting longer range, but I am not sure how much I will be at the 600 plus yard mark. Also I dont want to end up with a scope that is as long as the gun. I will eventually work out that detail and that will lead me to rings and a bi-pod. The comb of this gun is a little to steep for me so I think I will end up with an adjustable cheek piece as well, but I will sort that out after I get some trigger time.

I hope you guys will follow along as the build comes together. I will take pictures along the way of what I do with the gun. It should end up a great shooter. I am really excited about it. If you guys have any advice please chime in. I would appreciate your help. This will be my first real rifle build.

Looking forward to your progress! I use a Bushnell Elite 6500 4.5-30x50, and I absolutely love it!

I got a 4x30 tasco pronghorn that will do for ya.

That lil trigger blade is easy to remove, or put a rifle basix trigger in it. Thats what i have in my 300wm.

Got some goodies in the mail today when I got home. I got a Warne Tactical 20 moa base (that thankfully does not need to be bedded) and a Harris BRM bi-pod. It getting closer to done, but now I have to start saving for some optics. Dont poke to much fun at the mess in the background. We are packing up for a move!

I like the camo finish. Most camo is fugly, but the digital camos appeal to me.

Front stud is full of paint / gack. I need to drill it out but I moved all my tools to crystal springs. It will have to do until I get moved.
