Nazi shell?
I do not know any of the story behind this, it was in my grandfathers stuff. I found it when i was about 8 i think in a drawer, he died when i was 4 so i never got to ask him. Nobody else in the family has a clue about it other than he most likely brought it home from korea. I always assumed it was a us 20mm, didnt know about headstamps when i was little. I found it again last night while i was cleaning out a drawer and now i know its definitely not a us 20mm... since its has a waffen mark on it. Looking around on google images its a 20mm made in 1943. I have not found what the other marks mean yet.

It looks like it is still live. I would not handle it roughly. The AUZ code stands for Polte-Werk, Arnstat, Germany

Re: Nazi shell?
The primer looks to be fully intact, im going to put a few drops of oil down into the flash holes to hopefully kill it.

Most likely a anti-aircraft round.

Re: Nazi shell?
Is there a projectile? The primer does appear to be "live" so your idea of light oil into the flash holes is a good idea to "dewat" it. However if it's been open to the air for a while - ie, if the projectile was removed and the powder dumped out 60 + years ago - then exposure to the air & elements have probably deactived the primer compound, some of those salts used in priming back in the 40s were very hygroscopic.
It appears to be a 37mm PaK shell: Panzerabwehr Kanone shell. Maybe HoferUtzer can let us know: he is the weapons expert for his police district in northern Bavaria.
[third edit] OK I found a German reference: the "L 45" does indicate the 3.7cm (they referred to the kaliber in cm, not mm, but same thing) for this PaK, so that is definitely what you have. This ammo/cannon was so ineffective against a T34 that they called it the "doorknocker" (Heeresanklopfgerät) because all the army could do with it was "knock" on the tank to let the tank crew know they were there! It bounced off! Other ammo was developed such as the round shown in the film "Band of Brothers" where they fired a large grenade-type shaped charge.

Definitely German. Not sure how he'd have gotten it in Korea, but I can say that there were a lot of vets from the European theatre of WW2 who later went to Korea. My dad served in Europe and then served in Japan during the Korean war.

Thats the weird part to me, he was only in korea. I do not know what unit or anything, just that he was a marine.

Probably given to him / sold to him by a vet from Europe. Lots of European theatre vets who stayed in ended up serving in Korea. Maybe they sold it in a shop or something and your granddad bought it. But it's definitely German, antitank shell casing.Rw wrote:Thats the weird part to me, he was only in korea. I do not know what unit or anything, just that he was a marine.
