To FL resize or neck size?

Post by gmg on Sun Oct 02, 2011 2:48 pm

When I first began reloading rifle brass, I would FL resize, trim and chamfer. Now I have a Collet neck sizing die and was wondering after fireforming brass, should you do anything to brass or can you just neck size and reload from there. Wasn't sure where trimming process would come in if neck sizing

You still need to keep an eye on your brass OAL but you should get a couple of reloads before you need to trim again. You will also find that after a couple of reloads you will need to bump the shoulder back with a trip through the FL die. You will know when to FL size because it gets hard to close the bolt for no other obvious reason. It all depends on the caliber and the kind of pressures you run how often you will FL size.

+1 Richard's advice.

Neck sized brass seldom needs a trim. I set my calipers to the max length and lock them down using them as a go - nogo gauge.

Remember, you will probably not be able to use neck sized brass in any other rifle than the rifle you fired the brass in,
