S&W Model 29

Post by krunnels on Mon Oct 03, 2011 6:12 pm

Took my Model 29 out to make sure it was still sighted in for deer season. Had several 3" groups at 200 yards! Yep, I think it's ready. Very Happy

Pic's man! We Need Pic's. Then you can get into specifics like barrel length, optics, after market work done on it, etc.
P.S. - That's great grouping, you're ready but can't give the go ahead without pic's.

For some reason, my post went up twice.
It has an 8 3/8" barrel, and Leupold 2X scope. Hve no idea about what all has been done to it. It was a gift from my wife's uncle. He used to be a competitive shooter in his younger days. All he said about the revolver was that it was worked over by Jim Meyers (aka the Big German) from teh Laurel Area. I can tell you that it locks up nice and tight and is slicker than greased snot.
The load is a 240 grain IMI HP bullet over 22 grains of W-296. Case length is 1.280 and OAL is 1.568 Haven't shot it over a chrony, but i plan on limiting my hunting shots to 100 yards or less. Going to try to keep them inside of 75. I've harvested a couple of does around 50-75 yards with this combo and the end result was very satisfactory. One was DRT and the other ran maybe 25 yards before piling up. Both were shot broadside just behind the facing shoulder.

Now that I've learned how to post pics, here's a few of the Model 29. From what I've been able to find out, it originally came with a 4" barrel and had the Magna-ported 8 3/8" barrel added later. It was not originally drilled and tapped for a scope base. I ended up having to have that done by Billy up in Utica. I'll post pics of the groups I'm getting the next time I have a chance to go shoot.

That's a good looking gun for sure. Whoever changed the barrels, you can't tell that wasn't the original. No counting for taste but a .44 needs to be 6" at the least, JMHO, I could be wrong.

I just hate what a scope does to a nice handgun....I'd a had to leave the 29 alone and done a different revolver.

Gonna get me a old 29 one day...Congrats on having yours

If my aging eyes would let me focus on the sights and target at the same time, I never would have scoped it. However, since I wanted to be able to hunt with it, I had to put glass on it. I can still put the rear sight base on it, should I ever get the urge.
