Disappointed in Hydrashoks

Post by bwechols on Mon Oct 03, 2011 6:22 pm

I've been saving plastics jugs for a while because I thought it would be fun to fill them with water and shoot them up. Turns out, I was right. However, I was a little disappointed by what I found. I stacked several jugs in a row to see if I could "catch" some bullets to see what they looked like after impact. I was shooting standard pressure Federal Hydrashok in my snub-nose .38 (Smith & Wesson model 442). I shot some Winchester White Box hollowpoints that I grabbed at Wally World on the way to shoot out of my Glock 17. Here's what I got..... (.38 on the left, 9mm on the right)

As you can see, the .38 didn't expand anywhere near as much as the 9mm. Here's that same .38 with another that I recovered....

You can see that 2 of the 6 petals of the hollowpoint didn't even fold over on the left bullet. I'm seriously disappointed here. I guess I'm going to have to try some +P ammo for the .38. Ya'll think this result was simply a lack of velocity out of the snub-nose?

I'd like to see what a 4 or 6 inch barrel would have done.

for a snub you really need +P stuff. Gold dot now makes a short barrel bullet.. supposed to have soft soft lead and super thin jacket

When I bought my sp101 2 1/2" in about 1990(?), the guy behind the counter said he didn't think you could get magnum velocities out of so short a barrel. It has out performed my 2 1/2 .38's both using hydrashoks by a bit though. I've gotten good energy transfer into similar mediums comparing the two. Never chrono'ed them though. Has anyone who owns a chrono (Beladran?)?

weatherby turned my chrono into shrapnel many months back.. to stingy with the $$ to buy another one right now..

the magic number for jacket expansion is 1000 fps.. for a snub 38 thats pretty dang hard unless you slinging a 135gr or less bullet.. if you feeling frogy bufflo bore makes a 158gr LHP they claim makes 1040fps from a 2inch smith... I call BS on that being safe for 38spl's....

It seems I read that hydroshoks had been replaced a while back as the best expanding bullets.

I chrono-ed the following in 38 spl. All factory loaded ammo.

Winchester 125gr JHP +P, 4" GP 100 ran 976 fps and out of a 2 1/4" SP 101 ran 826 fps.

Federal Self Defense 125gr JHP +P, 4" GP 100 ran 1128 fps and out of the SP 101 ran 1017 fps.

Hornady 158gr XTP, 4" GP 100 ran 730 fps and out of the 2 1/4" Sp 101 ran 742 fps.

I've recovered a lot of rounds out of water tanks and buckets of sand, and 38's just don't expand much out of a handgun. When shot through a couple layers of denim, they don't expand at all, from what I've found. It's all just good backyard fun though. I doubt any of us will have to contend with being attacked by water or sand. I keep my 38's loaded with plain old 158gr LSWC.

If anyone around H'burg wants to chrono anything, holler. I've got the chrono and the place to do it.

Oh, wow. I thought we were looking at 2 unfired bullets for comparison.
