no WSM, but use to shoot a 300 for a while and went back to my 308 for deer. it kept cutting them in half and had to drag two medium pieces of deer out instead of 1 big one. got me tired quicker.
congrats on the new rifle. alwasy a good feeling coming home with a newbie. gold and guns good people as well

I hear that 300 WSM is a handful of rifle. When you say you want to shoot some nannies I hope you're talking about a nanny moose. Otherwise you may end up with a deer that's more "dead" than you'd planned on. Some of the guys who handload for that caliber may be able to steer you toward a load that won't turn those poor ole white tails inside out.

The 300 wsm is fast, flat and kicks prety good too. I had one several years ago and made some really good shots in the shoulder but had trouble dropping them in their tracks. You will need to try several bullet types before you find what works best. I shot a 150gr ballistic silvertip and the bullet would blow a 3 to 4 inch hole going in and seperate and two small holes on the other side and the deer run off.

300wsm is not the monster everyone who doesn't have one likes to make it out to be....... Nor have I experenced the problem with ballistic tip ammo that many relate.... my Savage 300 wsm kicks less than my Rem 700 in 7mag.... Get the new recoil pad that Rem makes and you'll be very happy with the gun.... then, take the money you saved on the gun and spend it on the ammo...it's HIGH!!!!! My 300wsm is my go-to gun if I'm not sure how far I'll be shooting....as far as using it in a 50 to 75 yd. food plot, is it overkill....Yep..... but does it drop them in their tracks....Yep...the only deer to move following the shot was a buck I shot at about 100 yds last year... he made 2 wobbly lunges before DRT... Is it accurate...yep... shot 3"-4" groups at 300 yds... with front bag rest only..... that'll do in Mississippi..... Look for ammo sales on cheaperthandirt, natchezss, and sportsmansguide...

I think a 300 WSM took last year's (2010) 1000 yard F-Class National Championship.

I've got both, the 300 wsm and a 300 Win Mag. Both shoot exceptionally well. One is a Savage FP and the other is a Savage 16 Stainless. the 300 wsm DOES have less recoil than the Win Mag. I load mostly 150 and 165 BT and some Scirrocco 165 and 180's.
The 180's are for an Elk Hunt if I ever get the chance.
I prefer Reloder 19 over most of the other powders.
If you want specifics I'll have to look them up.

I'm surprised that some of y'all are using this caliber for white tail deer. After reading over the ballistics tables I just assumed it would be WAY too much gun for Mississippi. I'm sure it's the best tool for the job when hunting an open field but I'd be afraid to try it for those close shots. Have y'all had any problems with damaged meat? It seems like at least one of the shoulders would be trashed after being hit with that round.

Caleb, my experience is it generally will penetrate the entrance shoulder and not expand until the heart/lungs...then the exit shoulder will have a 3/4" to 1" exit wound....very clean...... I must say that I've not shot a deer in MS with mine...only AL and TX, where sitting on 150yd+ plots....

Re: New Toy.... Remington model 700 chambered in 300 wsm
The best ammo i found to shoot in my .300 wsm was the Winchester
silver tip 150gr
I tried the 180 gr Accubond CT with no good results
an i also tried the 180 gr supreme elite 180gr shot Nannie @ 150yds
an slap through her it went i am yet to find that deer after trailing her 500 yds through the woods
I traded mine Saturday for a 45-70 still have the ammo though

I have only shot 150 gr with mine, with good results on Winchester silvertip, plain ol' Remmy Core-lokt, and Fed. Fusion...
