How much extra ammo do you carry when you "concealed carry"?

Post by inthe10ring on Sat Oct 08, 2011 4:42 pm

Sorry if this is a repeat from another post. I'm still fairly new to the forum and thought I would get some experts opinions.

I see a lot of discussion on the handguns that we carry concealed, but what about additional ammo/magazines/speed-loaders? How much ammo (in addition to the rounds in the handgun) do you carry and how (loose ammo, magazines, speedloaders, etc.) do you carry it?

For my S&W 442, I carry one speedloader (5 rounds) of ammo in a pocket. Last night, I carried my Glock 19 for the first time, concealed. With a 15 round mag, how much more ammo/magazine would I reasonable need to carry? One speedloader with 5 rounds doesn't require much effort, but an additional, fully loaded magazine is more weight.

Thanks,

My Glock 19 with a 15rd mag is my EDC. I usually don't carry an extra mag with it.

On occasion I carry my RIA 45ACP with an 8rd mag. I will carry an extra 8rd mag with that setup.

I had bought a used police type belt and use the loose shell holder when I carry a revolver. Looks like a Zippo lighter holder. Speed loaders are great in the winter but I have trouble pulling them off in the summer. I do carry a couple speed loaders in the car though. Have to practice loading the cylinder where you load the first shell where it will be the first one in line in case your reloading get cut short.

Depends where I'm going and what I'm carrying.

1911, generally just one reload, but sometimes two or 3....just depends what I'm planning to do or what I'm wearing that allows me to pull off more mags, so 15-29 rounds total of .45acp

Hi-power, usually just one reload, sometimes two, same reasons, so 31-46 rounds total of 9mm

XDm with streamlight, is my Jackson after dark gun so two reloads everytime guaranteed...so 49 rounds of .40s&w

LCR is my work gun, so an extra 5 rounds in my pocket...waiting on speed strips for it, so 10 rounds of .357

Some try to claim not to carry a reload because it shows intent to use it or some crap like that...I call bull

Agreed. All your lawyer needs to ask every LEO and even the bailiff how many mags they carry and even how many pistols.

Either LCP and one extra mag or G-36 and one extra or both and one one extra each.

Regardless of gun type, at least two reloads.

Around the house I'll go with no reloads....but when I'm leaving I already have so much other crap in my pockets I barely notice the added weight

Jake pretty much nailed it...Where, What and When. A trip down to the mailbox at mid-day is different from a trip at 0300 after hearing a disturance that woke me. Grabbing the weedeater from the shed requires less than looking for the source of that thump scrape bump at 0100.

I carry 2 spare magazines regardless of which pistol I am carrying (Kahr K9; Sig P239; or Sig P229). Pistol is OWB on right hip and spare mags are OWB on the left hip. Everything is always in the same place because that is how I have always trained and that is where my brain/hands will go under stress.

Glock 23 IWB right hip, 2 mags OWB left hip, full 15 rd mags so 45 rounds and a Kel-Tec 32 left cargo pocket or behind the mags using the built in clip IWB. Along with a Spyderco in right front pocket and Fenix 330 lumen flashlight in left front pocket. Then usually a front pocket wallet. paracord bracelet, cell phone, pager, and the kitchen sink. lol. Seems like I carry to much crap. Its difficult to get away with all that in scrubs so when at work only the keltec, spyderco, flashlight, and paracord.

I just have the full mag (10 rounds) of Buffalo Bore 10mm in the Smith. If that can't solve the problem, I should have shown up with a combat rifle or shotgun. Wink

+1 Phillip. If 1 hi cap mag won't do it you need a bigger gun. With my smith snubby i carry 1 speed strip and well practiced with it.

Unless you have a double-feed. Then you need pre-made funeral arrangements. I have never looked at my car and thought to myself, "No need to carry a spare tire. If I can't get it done with 4 tires, I just need to get an 18-wheeler!". Very Happy

That is my thought as well......to each his own, but I'm a pessimist/realist!

To build off what phillip said though regarding needing a rifle or shotgun, I would like to buy a short(18"~) 12ga, or another AR to mount(locking preferably) out of sight in my truck....the phrase "a handgun is to fight your way to a real gun" comes to mind. Is it likely to be necessary? Nope! Would I be pissed at myself right before dying if I ran out of ammo, or my handgun suffered some crippling malfunction?!? Oh yeah! I'd be cussing myself and saying my final prayers in my last breathe!
