Link to Rules and Shooting ranges, dates etc for Outlaw.
I would really like to start participating in these matches. Is there a link to a thread on here discussing rules, what ranges your shooting at, dates etc? I have never shot in a pistol match and think this would be great for me. Closest I have ever come is all the qaulifiying I did in the Army. Need to get a holster and some mag pouches.

Here is a link to the Steel Challenge Shooting Assoc., the governing body for Steel Matches. There you will find rules and clubs that shoot steel.
Magnolia Rifle & Pistol Club in Byram runs an Outlaw version of Steel Challenge, meaning they follow the rules, but the stages don't always fall into the sanctioned ones, but Cliff Cargill on here can better speak to the difference of Outlaw Steel and Steel Challenge.

Is there any outlaw matches at any of the ranges on the coast?

Not that i'm aware of. However Tangipahoa Practical Shooters in Amite, South of Hammond have a steel match. Not exacty sure at what interval they have them though. If the weather doesn't cooperate this weekend, they will have one Sunday instead of a USPSA match.

Go go double post. I stand corrected. Gun Ho Indoor shooting range holds an indoor falling plate match on the first and third friday nights of the month at 7. It's not like steel challenge, but it's a pistol match shooting steel regardless.
@Tanker- You don't necessarily have to have mag pouches to shoot outlaw steel. We will generally have one field course, that at some point will require some reloads on the fly, but otherwise the bulk of the stages are stand and shoot, and you can pull fresh mags from a bag or something. For USPSA or ICORE though, mag pouches will be necessary. As for when and where. We obviously compete at Magnolia, and we generally only use the East 50/100, the 25 yard pistol range and the back 40. Steel alternates with ICORE from month to month between being on a saturday and Sunday. One month Steel is saturday, ICORE is on Sunday. Those dates are on the Magnolia match calendar.
In regards to rules, classes are simple. Limited Rimfire, Open Rimfire (optics), Limited Centerfire, and Open Centerfire. Most any gun without a comp and optic will fall into limited centerfire. Traditional courses of fire involve 5 shots shot mostly from one standing position. 4 plates and a stop plate that is shot last to stop your time. You repeat this 5 times for each stage, and your worst time for each stage is thrown out. So you walk away with 4 good runs added together to form your overall stage time. It's "outlaw" because we make up some stages and we use some traditional steel challenge stages. The ones we make up, may require more than 5 shots total. For instance, last month we shot a stage that required 15 total shots, shot from 3 different positions. But it remains an overall time game.
