Dealing With Pawn Shops

Post by g2072 on Mon Oct 10, 2011 1:55 pm

Ever been in a pawn shop that wouldn't deal ANY. I was in one today looking at two rifles totaling over seven hundred dollars and the guy wouldn't budge a penny on both of them. I was pretty interested in one in particular and somewhat interested in the other but left them both once he wouldn't move at all. Never bought anything in a pawnshop that they wouldn't beat asking price at least a little and probably never will.

My advice, never go back to a pawn shop that won't haggle.

I have bought many, many items at pawn shops in the past but haven't found one lately that will "jew" like they used to. I always preferred mom and pop stores over the big chain stores.

I suggest you don't go to "Quick Cash" pawn in Columbia.. Great selection but the price on the tag and not a penny less is what they'll take.

There are two in the Jackson area like that. One says that they put their bottom price on them to begin with. The other is a chain and they are not allowed to negotiate.

Haggling is part of the fun with Pawn Shops. One gun, OK maybe, with two guns at $700, there had to be some wiggle room. Most like to turn over inventory as fast as it comes in.

Did you have to let them hold your drivers license to look at the firearms?

Didn't have to show my DR. He wanted the price on the tag plus tax and wouldn't take a penny less. One was marked 399.99 and the other was 379.99. I actually offered 400 cash for the one I really wanted.

Dang! He wouldn't bite on 400 cash? His business must be doing good not to haggle any on prices.

Have never bought anything at a pawn shop...and most of what I have seen at em...I would not have...

Mainly concerned that I'd be purchasing something that was stolen

In General - Most gun counter folks could really take a lesson in proper gun handling, (I've been muzzle swept so many times in a gun shop it aint funny) listening and taking care of the customer...Most seem to have really bad attitudes...I realize that I just painted with rather broad brush...but that is what I've seen over the years...

When I open my gun store with former Hooter's girls behind the counter....things will be different....I'll even post one on the "reloading aisle" Smile

waiting....

neck,
i have been told that pawn shops are required to report serial numbers when they take something in. i would think between then and when they come off pawn and available for sale they would turn something up if they were stolen... in the event that it didnt, i would also think that you would have some protection with the bill of sale and the 4473... the only thing that could bite you is if you sold the gun for profit and spent the money, having to come up with the money to give back to the person you sold the gun to...

At a pawn shop, I personally will not pay sticker price + tax for a gun. They'll usually atleast drop sales tax.

I've been in shops that won't haggle, and usually turn around and walk out. In my opinion, any business that doesn't want your money bad enough to haggle a little isn't worth fooling with.

I collect old guns and 99% of them come from pawn shops. I haven't bought a new gun in years. Out of the hundreds I've bought at pawn shops I've gotten 1 that turned out to be stolen. I took the gun back to the pawn shop and met the police there. The pawn shop bought the gun back from me so that it would be in their name and then turned it over to the police. I got my money back and got a discount on the next one I bought them.

Pawn shop owners are creepier than a drunk midget clown gently stroking your leg with a balloon animal

I really enjoy pawnshop searching, but rarely buy from them. I have found most of the time I can buy new for close to the same price. If they have something I want I will ask what the best price is, if it's close I'll counter offer. Then the fun begins.

I have bought at least 50 plus plus guns from pawn shops mostly in the Jackson Metro area I like the old stuff and military surplus. You haft to check regularly and start a relationship with all the people who work there, get to know there names and make sure they know yours, when you walk in the door they will even know what you would like to see and what has come out of pawn since you have been there last. I always Haggle about price when needed but if you buy enough they usually start with a reasonable price, they really appreciate return regular customers. I have received what turned out to be a stolen gun once, returned it to the shop, back in there name and they More than made up for any inconvenience it caused me. I would not have the gun collection I have with out Pawnshops
