Start with the basics then go from there. Locate a lower reciever for 308. it will have a different mag well and be a little bigger I believe. i didn't see any for sale on that site. then pick out the type upper you want. what are you trying to build? a sporter, bull barrel, target rifle? I would think it pretty hard to beat the price on a DPMS 308. They sell the 223's for 599 and the 308 for around 899.

I understand that some makes of uppers don't fit some makes of lowers. Be careful here............

There are 2 main patterns as far as uppers and lowers go: dpms. And armalite. Armalite makes the only real "ar10" and has been around longer but dpms pattern rifles are getting a lot of aftermarket support. I know the dpms pattern lowers take regular ar15 parts. Not sure about the armalite pattern rifles. I have a Remington r25, which is a dpms pattern. Mags are cheaper than armalite pattern.

My r25 has a 20 inch barrel and is about an inch shorter overall than my 20 inch rem 700. The r25 should be plenty accurate for deer at 350. Shot at 300 today with a 3-9 power scope and could hold about a 4 inch group prone. They are made by dpms and a lot of people claim sub moa groups with dpms rifles with heavy barrels.

I personally like the DPMS. Its a good gun at a great price. You would be hard pressed to beat the price. As far as quality the armalite "may" be better not sure on that but like he said it has been around longer. I was leaning towards an AR-30 bolt action .338 lapua mag from armalite but then saw that the ammo was the same price as 50bmg and decided not to buy yet. So Armalite has drawn my attention too. Either way I don't think you can go wrong with either type gun. Both will do what you want.
check out prices for armalite here

DPMS sales here

you'll notice about 400 cheaper for the DPMS. Marks outdoors in Bham can get you this rifle for cheaper than MSRP.
p.s. I like the idea of a 18 inch barrel smaller and lighter still accurate.

I took the liberty of checking with a few of our suppliers on AR-10 stuff. Most everyone is out of all the cheaper DPMS rifles, etc. You're best bet if you want one of those is to find one in stock at a retailer.

I don't really think building your own would be any cheaper when looking at a 308. The reason building your own AR-15 is cheaper is because there are a thousand companies making the parts to one standard, so they can be had for cheap. The 308 is only made by a handful of companies with competing designs, so you can usually get a whole assembly as cheap or cheaper than buying individual components. Add in the complication of making sure all the parts you've gathered are compatible, and you'd probably wish you'd just bought a whole rifle.

Now, on to my sales pitch...

I did find a few armalite rifles at one of our wholesalers. We can get you one of their AR-10A4 rifles in 16 or 20" and green or black furniture for $1295 + tax (MSRP is $1557). The 16" comes with the M4 style stock, and the 20" comes with a fixed stock.

DPMS is good, but ArmaLite is the original.

::EDIT::

I checked one more supplier that we rarely use and came up with a 16" Bushmaster 308 ORC

http://www.bushmaster.com/catalog-308ORC.asp

I could sell it to you for $1125 + tax, and it would include a lifetime warranty.

Just a suggestion. If you are going to spend that kind of money why not get an M1A/M14?
