Yesssssss Please.........Love the big stuff!!!!! Been shooting too hot 45-70 rounds in my 'tender for, ooohhhh, 25 or 30 years can't remember just when I got it. (think that is a sine that I shoot to much hot stuff???? lol) I got to get a set of dies for my 500 so I can try the 700gr just for giggles..... I shoot 525's in my 45-70 14" SSK for the long shots. Just to bang a gong. Have hit 500 but not every time Sad But it is fun trying.
All that being said I am starting to put on a glove. It is a very sticky rubber work glove. I don't like the gun slipping in my hand.

Do you think the 338fed would work better than the 308? I just have it in my head that it's the best long range bullet dia. I did before it got so big with the 338 lapua. You get a longer bullet in the same weights. And the 308 line of cartridges do best in the 15 to 16 inch barrels. So it looks like the 338fed would be a great round. I need to sell my 308win or trade for 338fed. Know anyone that has one. Better yet know anyone who wants to get something lighter, like a 308........lol

butch generally speaking in pistol lengths its a waste. there is a magic number of 20ftlbs that the average joe can with stand on recoil.. 338 federal usually packs 23-25ftlbs and thats with a 9lb rifle not a 3lb pistol lol the 338-08 i had was what the fed was based of off. Was not overly impressed with it, something just didnt click for me the 338-06 could handle heavier bullets that why i kept it.

Beladran wrote:of all the 338's why the federal?

Well like I said I just think that the 308 case has all a 15" barrel can burn. Now the reason is in the load data. The 30-06 is not faster than the 308 and look at how much powder that the 30-06 holds. In lyman's 48th edition with 15" barrels a 150gr in the 308 can go up to 2618fps. OK now the same book has a 150gr in the 30-06 only going up to 2614fps. Now I think the 150gr is the best for a short barrel (that is just me) In the heaver stuff the -06 could go faster. I don't have loads on the 338 -8 or -6 but I just thought it would be the same. I know that is an old book but it was all I was going by.
And know this I am never to big of a man to say I'm wrong. So if I'm wrong help me please...........I am told by my wife I'm wrong all the time and I say "yes dear, your right." So I can take it.......lol ...........No really if you have better data let me know so I wont make the same mistake I did with the 308 if it's not as good as the -06. As you have seen I like "more power".........
Thanks guys, I'm glad I have found like minded people......

(oh free advice "yes dear" has kept me married for 29years..........)

speer #14... 338fed24"barrel 225gr btsp maxes out at 2440fps/2975ftlbs
338-06 23"barrel 225gr btsp max out at 2678/3584ftlbs..... 238fps and 600ftlbs difference and 06 did it with a inch shorter barrel..
if you want as much juice as possible go balls to the wall get a 12inch 470nitro!!

lol and call me when you shoot it so i can watch!
but in all seriousness you would have to put pretty much any 338 on a encore frame as i doubt a contender could stand multi shots..

Beladran I have come up with a 338 that I think would work in the 'tender. It's my own idea, it is to take a 35rem and neck down to a 338 and straighten up the case wall.....but would never put anything like we talked about in a 'tender. If I said anything to make you think so sorry. I know my T/C's............Have you seen the vid on youtube where the gunsmith made his own barrel for an Encore, a 600nitro, well his welds didn't hold up and the barrel just missed his head!!!!!!!

Never shoot one that opens it's self. NO WAY!! Not me!
So back to the 338 your talking about rifle barrels. In the shorter handgun barrels you don't get a full burn of even a 308 size case. Look at the loading data for handguns. In a long gun your way right the -06 case is so much better. And if the -6 shoots better for you cool go with it. I was just looking at the data. The real world is not the same as it is in the data. On paper things always look different...........lol...........I do bet the -6 is a flame thrower too, just not as bad as the 375/338 tho. I would love to have seen that, but if it opened I could never put it in my hands.
And please know I am not trying to start a fight no way no how. I am just talking with you friend to friend, It is not that important so that I would lose you as a friend. And yes I think of you as a friend. I just like a good talk about stuff. Not trying to start anything. Just remember that, ok? Please feel free to tell me when I'm wrong. I love a good talk. I learn more that way. And to me this is fun.

I to enjoy this exchange of knowledge! by no means do i think your trying to start something an i hope you dont think i am either = ) us encore guys gotta stick together! dang custom bolt guns, AR's,AK's, owners are dime a dozen but we aint so much..

this is just hear say from other gun nuts but they were saying that opened up 06 cases were more effecient than 30 cal version.. saying fast powders were burnt befor the base of the bullet left the neck and slow powders were burnt with in the first couple inchs. the 375-338 was crap if you placed a white bed sheet at then end of the muzzle you could probably recover 10-15grs of powder! lol
i would like to try some of the whisper series of bullets.. the 300 whisper is pretty cool, they also have a 338,410, and two different 500's that sling 900gr API rounds!

there is one I have seen that would be a hoot to try the .500 A-Square or 50 peacekeeper depending on who you are talking to. Both are a .460 Weatherby Magnum necked up to take a .510. Now that would be a BLAST in an Encore rifle or handgun. Then you could beat out my 500 S&W 12"..........lol talking about a flash. The whispers are great. I would love a 416 but I want the "can" so no one will hear it.

I guess not. I thought MGM had them but they don't...Sad......you will have to get a 50 Alaskan to beat me. LOL
You can't get any of the Weatherby Magnums off there. Well oh dear...I talked to a man who had a 50 Alaskan 18" handgun (which I think takes out the handgun part) with the tank break on it and he said it hurt with all that. So I know it would be fun in a 15". Have a different friend that is making a 50-120 or the 50 3 1/2", he didn't know which, in a 15". I was telling him about how they used to spike loads. To do this you put like 3gr of red dot or something like speed, at the bottom of your slow powder. Be it black or just a very slow powder with wading on top of that to keep the powders in place. You don't just mix the powders in a shaker. It's like having a hot primer. NOW I AM NOT TELLING ANYONE TO TRY THIS!!!!!!! But I have with the 45-70 and black powder and it works well in a 14" you get a good burn. And I got great groups with it at 200m. My Williams sight was just bout maxed out. But it would do it.
