Mulling over a S&W 500 - talk me out of it

Post by msredneck on Tue Oct 11, 2011 7:25 pm

Have sold more handguns this year than I have bought...

Been getting the "hots" lately for a S&W 500...Those of you who have one...anything I should know about.....what are the gotcha's if anything...I see they have a compensated model.

I'm planning on being a wus and loading it down

Just the price of the initial ammo. Unless you start out with unloaded brass

well - I'll have to man up and buy a few boxes of commercial ammo...

I doubt you can buy 500 S&W brass from someone like Starline...

I'll pour my own bullets eventually.....

That Big ole revolver just turns me on....

I'd love to hunt with one. I'd settle for a .44 Mag if I had one of those.

I had one for a while (the one in my profile) and recoil wise it wasn't as bad as a Super Blackhawk with hot Cor Bons. But I did wear shooting glove while shooting it. I let it go after a few years. I wish it had been a shorter barreled version. Like a 5" model.

Neck, please don't buy a short-barreled S&W 500. Get 6" are LONGER.....

Yes, Starline does make 500 S&W brass. Look at Midway USA.....

I too vote for plinking with medium loads using cast bullets. More FUN and less PAIN...........(and $$$$).

As you know, I have one ... they are good for absolutely NOTHING!! Was fun at the beginning .... sits in the safe now ....

Told a guy the other day that I only load it down for plinking ... he responded back; why in the hell do you have it then if you do not shoot it for what is was made for ... got me to thinking - he is right.

Took the 686 out for the past three days shooting the back plate rack at Magnolia - 100 rds each day ..... now that is fun ... a lot more than the 500S&W.

If you are going to reload - well, not if but when because commercial rounds are around $50-$60 for a box of 20. Remember, even when you download them, that is still a lot of powder -- gaschecks are between 5-7 cents each ...

If I had not promised my youngest son he could have it (later on), I would probably sell it and find me a nice .45LC.

I didn't mean to sound like in was recommending a short barreled model. I just wish mine had been one so it could serve as a bear gun, or something, being I couldn't bring myself to try and hunt with it.

A .460 sounds better it'll take .454 and .45 Long Colts

Go ahead and get one. With all you sold, some money must have musta fell 'tween the cracks. Get one of the original 72 oz. ones. Fella like you needs a big un.

Do it! I shoot 440 grain gc's out of mine loaded with 10 grains of Trail Boss and it recoils less than a 44 magnum. My 4" shoots pretty good too, I want to kill a deer with it this year if I can get within 50 yards. A 1/2" hole going in and comming out should leave a good blood trail!
