If anything is fixed it should be the length of time between the sentencing of death, and when the penalty takes place.

Myself, I say lethal injection's too easy a way out, and too expensive. No need for a squad either--just a single round, back of the head execution-style. Nothing fancy. Or they get to choose hanging (long drop, instant death via snapped neck). Both about as painless and quick as you can get--and certainly far better than what they gave any of their victims. It's inexpensive too. Bullets are far cheaper than the needle, and the rope is reusable.
None of this dying of old age on Death Row either. They should get one appeal, should it fail, sentence should be carried out 6 months exactly to the day of conviction.
Of course, before doing this I believe there should be quite compelling evidence (DNA certainly) before calling for it. Circumstantial, not so much--there doesn't need to be much question that it was them. As it stands now, the death penalty is hardly a deterrent, and my hope is that putting teeth back into it would actually save lives in the long term (by people rethinking their intent to murder).

I have long been an advocate of bringing back public hangings. Seems to me that bulging eyeballs, bleeding from the eye sockets, and self defecating all while choking and hearing your own neck snap could make for a good deterrent...

I certainly agree with you. Swift justice is the only deterrent.

Yep, in my opinion, cutting the never-ending appeals and delays is the problem. Not the method of execution.
Of course, the bleeding heart liberals who oppose ANY punishment for ANY criminal are using the appeals process to drive up the cost of punishment.
The in terminal appeals also raise the possibility of the guilty getting off due to loss of evidence, death of witnesses, loss of recall of the facts by witnesses, more compassionate jurors, etc.
I suspect that 99.999% of the people who are convicted are really guilty. Most have a rap sheet a mile long and are known trouble makers.

yep. When someone is found guilty and sentenced to death, leave the court room and get on with it.
