Colt Government Model 70
I picked up this Colt at the gun show a couple weeks ago in Tupelo. I've been trying to find a place to decode the serial number on it but I haven't had any luck. Can anyone here help me out with this?
The serial number is: 26755G70

The serial number is: 26755G70

Re: Colt Government Model 70
My serial number chart indicates that is was made in 1977. They made a little over 31,000 of them that year.

Do you happen to know if the grips are factory or did they come with the medallion grips?

1977 is correct. You can look it up at www.proofhouse.com

Might be a dumb question but what are you calling the idiot mark? The orange sight?
Re: Colt Government Model 70
It's the 1/4 inch scratch right behind the trigger, I should know I'm in the "idiot" bunch.

never really thought about it but the sight could in fact be an idiot mark.... put mark on idiot and squeeze idiot gone.

I've got one of them! Bought it in 1980 and paid $298 for it brand new! Wish I had bought a truck load of them!
