1911 opinions please
I have informed my better half that I am saving up for a good 1911. Told her it will be a while so she didn't panic so guess she knows who the boss is. Yeah right! Anyway, I need a bit of input from some of you "medium hi-end" gun owners on the best bang for the buck 1911 in the $1-1.5 K cost range. I have no problem with used as I usually prefer that way. Can I get a used Wilson, Ed Brown, etc., for that price or would I be better off with Colt or STI or something of that type. I do have a series 80 SS colt now and am pleased with it. Would prefer removable sights so I can put on sights of my choice. Opinions please!

Howard

Kimber Custom Shop Super Match II ---> if you can get one at 1.5k - 2k
Nighthawk Predator III ---> if you can find one going for 2 -2.5k
there are many other fine 1911's of equal of superior quality. these are the 2 that come to mind when thinking about saving up for a good 1911.

So, my question is what makes a "good" 1911 a good 1911?

I'd avoid Kimber personally. Their "Custom Shop" is a myth. There is no custom shop. All they are is production guns with different engraving on the slide and a higher price tag.
STI makes really good stuff.
You can probably find a used Les Baer Premier II for around $1500.

Most of what you pay for on the higher end guns is the fitting. Tight slide to frame fit, tight barrel lockup, blending of safeties and other controls, higher end finishes, etc.

I'd look at any Kimber, of course there are some lemons and haters out there
I'd also look at STI, maybe colt, but you're still not getting much more than the name.
Give Dan Wessons a hard look!

Re: 1911 opinions please
Joshua - Not being anywhere near a 1911 expert, my take is that a good 1911 is indeed one that goes bang everytime you pull the trigger and hits what you aim at, just Tree has stated. To me, a solid well made 1911 is fit and finish using top end parts, inside and out. An engine will crank and run, sometimes even great. But a hand fitted engine, balanced and blueprinted, with top quality parts will run longer, better and smoother than the mass produced one off the assembly line. You can make an engine pretty on the outside, but the inside is what matters. And, at least to me, is what makes a good 1911 as compared to an assembly line version. But that's just my non-expert opinion sir.
A Nighthawk, Dan Wesson or STI would sure get my attention. It just seems that even though high end guns hold value, I could maybe pick a decent one up for a good price. Kind of wondering if there is any particular brand to watch for.
I have had three Kimbers in the past, two jam-o-matics and one jewel. Anymore, Kimbers make me cringe. Almost like putting down good money on a roll of the dice. A gamble!
Thanks for your input guys.

Another thought is a Fusion full custom? I'd have a hard time dropping that much and settling, find exactly what you want and save until you can afford it. I'd really like to own a Wilson but think Brown and Les Baer have better deals available.

Re: 1911 opinions please
you said you already have a colt series 80. That is a great platform to have a custom built off of. Find a good 1911 gunsmith have them replace barrel, fire controls, sights and they can add any other things you are wanting on the gun. This is the route i have taken on a colt LTW commander and i did it one step at a time over about a year. It hurt a lot less that way. I am at the last step right now with barrel installation. There are a couple of great 1911 smiths in mississippi that can build you a really nice 1911.

A used Wilson would be a good choice and you could save a few bucks too.

Re: 1911 opinions please
you should be able to find a used les baer towards the top of that price range, and you'd have yourself one fine pistol.
i'm gonna second what eaglestroker said about fusion though, because that's what i went with. you should be able to get one in that price range as long as you don't go overboard with the options (ionbond is expensive!). i liked the fact that they will literally build the gun just like you want it, with whatever parts you want used, without jacking the price up on you. i kept mine fairly simple, but it was just what i wanted and it was a little cheaper than a comparable les baer or ed brown (when i say comparable, i mean options; don't want to start a pissing match about which is better quality).

Str8 up brother if your truely looking for the best bang for buck then RIA Tactical would be it to the low end, Springfield Loaded or Colt Government for mid and I have no opinions nor ground to stand on for a High End 1911. If you truely want a quality 1911 then I speak truth but if you want something thats gonna get oohs and aahhs at the rang then go for those Kimbers and such.

I think the new Springfield Range Officer is a very nice 1911. But then again, I'm far from a 1911 expert.

Re: 1911 opinions please
Thanks to all. Never thought about a build, interesting. But my old heart is kind of pointing toward a Les Baer, Ed Brown, Wilson, or any other high end gun I can afford. Never owned a $1K plus gun so I have to be careful about getting something I would be afraid to carry or shoot without cringing. So guess I gotta keep saving and keep looking.

Have a look here as well. Any of the choices you list will be money well spent. Don't settle for less, go for what your heart is pointing toward.
Edit: You may have a wait from some of the top makers. But, it's worth the wait.

Re: 1911 opinions please
I would look for an early Series I Kimber. The early Kimber's were put together very well. Every early Kimber I have ever owned would outshoot my Colt Gold Cups and shoot as well as custom guns with match grade barrels installed. The Kimber dovetails offer a lot of choices for aftermarket sights. I like the Heine sights.
Once you take the jump past the early Kimbers...I would be looking at either a Wilson or an Ed Brown. Or you could just the funds you were going to spend and customize your Colt.
Be happy to meet you and let a you try a couple of nice early Kimbers for comparison

The only difference in the Loaded and RO models are sites. RO has target sites and Loaded has Nite sites.

Kimber still makes fine 1911s. But id say take a look at a Sig 1911. I like mine better than any other pistol i have. Hearing good thing about Smith & Wesson 1911s also.
