I'm just kinda curious, what will you be doing with the gun? Carrying it or closet queen? Either way, what's really the use of having a high end gun like that other than just bragging rights? I'm not hating, I just don't understand the concept of saving for a high end gun when there are plenty of other options out there that are just as reliable or will dress up & sit in the closet just as good as any $2000 gun. If one is rich & has the money to blow, I can halfway understand. But if you have to save, then I'd rather have two kimbers or colts. That's just my 2 cents anyway. I hope you find what you want. But me, I'd go for 2 Fords rather than 1 Rolls-Royce anyday.

Some folks are happy with whatever WalMart sells, others are not.

OP has his heart set on a quality weapon [yes there is a difference] and I respect him for knowing what he wants and going after it.

Everyone can throw in their .02 as it's still a relatively free country.

It would depend on what I was doing with the gun, or what it's intended purpose was, but if I already had a Colt I might save for a Wilson, Baer, or Nighthawk. I'd also consider Fusion. If you ever get around the coast you're more than welcome to come out and shoot mine, I've got a Kimber and Dan Wesson.

Looking at the prices on the Dan Wessons one would think they are custom mades as well. They are on the pricey side it would seem.

Awshux, you make some good points, but. I am just a few years from retirement so I know I better get the "good" toys now while I am still working. I will carry it some, but frankly, I will just take it to the range and shoot it, rub on it and in general just admire it for what it is. I have many guns that I seldom shoot now so having to justify a use for it before I will get it is not a problem. I got one more empty space in my safe that needs filling and I guess that is reason enough. When you get a bunch of years on you it makes you (me anyway) realize that there are a lot of things left in life you will not accomplish or even attempt. You make up your mind to focus on certain thing - hobbies some folks call them - and you more or less just go for it.

I have God, a wonderful family and reasonable health so firearms are one of the things I focus on. So I might as well get some that I have admired and read about for years, but was always too tight to spend the money on. Now I could just write a check for a nice gun, but the idea of saving for it just seems to add to the mystique of a fine firearm. Okay I'm through sharing my unsolicited opinions. Many thanks to each of you for the interesting input. 1911's seem to bring out the best in most of us I see.
Regards,
Howard

Second that on smith 1911, I have two and they have been flawless. I am no expert on 1911's, but mine are extremely tight and the fit and finish is perfect. I have put several hundred rounds down the barrels with no mess ups. I have a full size and a PD and both were under 900 with tax.

DWs are made from Ed Brown parts(entirely I do believe), hence the price. They are also made in a small shop, not on a large assembly line, again, hence the price. I do not personally own a DW, but have been lusting for one for a while now.

There are a lot of well made 1911s right now........it's hard to go wrong

A Colt Goldcup is a fantastic choice, but what it really boils down to is personal preference and use. I have a Springfield gov't model that I carried for a few years and love it. I should also note that I have a preference for the traditional gov't style with the spur hammer and smooth trigger rather than the skeleton styles. The S&W and Sig 1911s are virtually flawless in my experience, but if you decide on a Kimber, I would recommend looking for a nice, older used one as I, as well as many friends, have had some feeding difficulties on the newer ones, even when shooting hardball.

I have one of the last Dan Wesson CBOB 10mms that was made. They do use Ed Brown parts and this is a reason for the price. It is basically a Toyota / Lexus deal. Both are made the same way with parts, it just has a diff name on them. I love mine.. I carry it some but more so just love a nice high end 1911.. My next will be a Ed Brown

here is a picture of mine

My friend has a les baer. He had to wait several months but its guaranteed to shoot a 1 inch group at 25 yds or something to that effect. Also its the best bang for your buck IMO, if you got the cash. There are more expensive customs, but what really makes them better than a Les Baer?

Wilson is no longer a custom shop. They are a production shop I think you get more Bang for your buck with an STI. With that being said you can get all the parts for either a wilson or an STI from Brownells for a good price and assemble it yourself
