Shooting a 58cal 449gr REAL boolit

Post by doggoner on Tue Oct 25, 2011 5:22 pm

I recently got a Lee 58cal REAL boolit mold and cast up a batch of test boolits. Today I sighted in the old blunderbuss. My load was 70gr Pyrodex RS, an overpowder card I cut using a 5/8 inch plug cutter I got from Harbor Freight and the boolit at 449gr unlubed. I lubed the boolits with homemade Emmert's lube smeared on by hand. The first pic is the final three shots. It took a while to get the old girl warmed up and dialed in as it hasn't been shot in about 15 years. I ran out of boolits or I would have shot a five shot string. Oh well. The group measures .659 inches. I shot it using the open sights that came on the Cabelas Hawken. They aren't the best sights but did the job. If you've read any of my previous posts, you know I'm old, shaky and have dimming eyesight. 'Nuff said. The group was shot at 50 yards. The 22cal holes are from a previous outing and shot by my granddaughter. I was too cheap to put up a new target. I feel confident Bambi isn't safe within 100 yards using this rifle. Well, 75 yards for sure and 100 yards with a steady rest.

This is the setup I shot from and shows the old gril waiting to be cleaned up after her workout today.

All in all, I gained a new respect for the old girl. She did her part. Now it's up to me to do my part this fall. Lord willing, I'll be able to post a picture of a dead Bambi in the outdoor thread.

Look likes she's ready to go. If one doesn't drop right there...it'll leave a blood trail Ray Charles could see with his cane.

That was a nice tight group for a rifle that has not been shot in so long. I'm sure it will get that deer for you.
