Question About Priming
I am a novice so please excuse me. I recently put my Hornady hand primer together and started priming a few cases I've resized. My question is about the amount of pressure needed to fully seat the primer. They all seemed to be flush but it got me to thinking about some things. Will the primer detonate if too much pressure is applied. Anybody ever had this happen.

Re: Question About Priming
I've had a few primers go in sideways and crushed and they never detonated. But maybe I got lucky.

Re: Question About Priming
I don't think a hand tool could apply enough pressure to detonate a primer if the primer is inserted straight. Keep the hand tool clean.

Re: Question About Priming
you gotta understand how a primer fires off. you can stick one in a 20ton press and smush it flat as a peice of paper and it not set off.
inside the primer is a anvil ">" that is cover by the primer cup "]" ">]"
the priming compound between the anvil and the cup is an explosive that is ment to be set off by precusion.

Re: Question About Priming
Just think how much pressure we put on primers using a bench-type press. It has a ~1ft lever arm, and compound leverage, and I seat them firmly, with no issues. Lie they already said, keep it free of debris and powder, use a primer pocket reamer if needed so it is smooth. If they are not seated completely you may have misfires.

Re: Question About Priming
Primers need an impact force to fire. You are not impacting the primer and the force is spread over the surface of the primer. I have never had a decapping pin ignite a primer.
You might as well worry about whether you could apply enough thumb pressure to a round to set off the primer.
