I was thinking A4 too but looks like it has a big magazine.

It's a 1903-A4 with a BAR magazine adapted to it or an Air Service 03 from WWI with a permanent 25 round magazine.

I think one of those optics came with the last Daisy .177 rifle that I bought! Smile

Question: what is the shiny "plate" wrapped around the shin of the leftmost foot in the photo? Is this part of the boot? I've never noticed this with any uniform.

And my question is...why? What purpose was this rifle to serve?

I've seen modified Springfields with BAR magazines, but never on a sniper rifle before. The Germans field tested 20 round magazines for the Gewehr 98 during WW1, but it didn't work very well with those.
