Budget Remington 700 build

Post by micahbxd40 on Sun 30 Oct 2011 - 18:06

I'm a newbie wanting to shoot semi long range (500-600yds). And use the same gun for hunting.

I bought a barely shot 700 in 7mm 350$
Konus M30 8.5x32x52 scope 329$
Bipod 35$
Trigger adjusted to where I want it

Now I want a budget stock around 250$

What do yall think ??
I like the looks of the choate.
They any good?

Bell and Carlson is a great choice...right now I'd say if you can find it...better latch on....lots of great stocks out there...just not that many available

I'd say you better figure on adding a 10 or 20 MOA base to the want list

How much MOA adjustment u got in that Konus ?

It said 50" adjustment at 100yds not sure as this is my first scope.
The only thing I dont like is it's 1/8 MOA adjustments

MOA base is that a adjustable scope base?

Try www.stockysstocks.com. They have Bell and Carson stocks as well as other choices. Just follow the prompts in the upper left hand corner and see if there is anything that lights your fire. Good luck on your build.

You'll like 1/8 adj for precision

scopes have a limited amount of internal adjustment/movement. The higher the price, the more adjustment you have. Many of what I call "bargain" hunting scopes just don't cut it even at "medium" ranges...They just won't adjust enough to get you on target at say 600 yards

You can overcome some of this with a scope base that is already cut with a cant of 10 moa (on a 1/8 scope that's 80 clicks) or 20 moa the equivalent of 160.

At any rate...don't sweat it...enjoy the the 7 mag recoil Razz

I think you can find BDL bottom metal pretty cheap on EBay. Also check the classifieds on accurateshooter.com.

A good varmit stock from H&S precision might be nice.

I have several and like em a lot

Having a gun customized to what you want is always worth it...

It just might not be worth it to someone else when you go to sell it

Personally first thing I'd do on your project is rechamber to another caliber.....

I have another newbie question

If I zero it at 200yds it will be 1.4" high at 100yds

Do I adjust the scope down or do I aim lower?

In my honest opinion 1.4" is not enough to worry about. I would hold dead on and let it fly. If you are hunting that is plenty close..

According to some experts when hunting you have aproximately 18 inches to work with and still be in the kill zone. So Chuck Hawks said drop that to 10 inches and sight your rifle in to give you the farthest distance still within the tube. So for my .257 weatherby mag I've got it 0'd at 300. Its a few inches high at 100 and a few low at 600 so I put it in the middle of the vitals from 0-600 yards and I'm good to go. However you are talking to a lot of world class looooong range shooters here and I would listen to them if you want to learn a great deal about shooting especially long range. I believe they all 0 at 100 then dope the scope based on their specific BC and windage for whatever yardage they are shooting. Its not real practical hunting. Oh an seems to me most of those guys are using 6.8's these days. its BC is not as high as a 7 mag though so I'm not sure why that is the case.

I'd google a good ballistics calculator like JBM and do some studying

It depends on caliber, bullet weight you are shooting, Its Ballistic Coeffcient or BC, velocity fps wind direction etc etc...

You can't get all your answers here...Gonna have to pony up and do some homework and load testing....That's where all the fun is anyway
