And, I think the 7-08 is the way to go. But since you've already got the gun, fix it up and go shoot it. Or, shoot it some, then fixit up, and see how it needs to be tweaked. Might work as-is; some rifles do. 5 or 600 yards is a long way to shoot a deer from.

Re: Budget Remington 700 build
There is nothing wrong at all with the 7mag for the purpose that you stated. if memory serves me the UK world record in 2007 was 2.67" 5 shot with a 7wsm. I own all of the above mentioned calibers 7-08,308,7mag,300win mag. The first three are production guns and will all average about the same, the 300 win is a custom build and will outshoot the others. Out to 500 yards the deer cant tell a damn bit of difference which one they are shot with IF you do your part.
The main thing to not over look is a good quality bullet, get into reloading if you have not already it will offer a great deal better accuracy and load options.

About how much does it cost to get into reloading?
I plan on using the hornady sst superformance in a 154 or 164 grain.

My .308 loves the Hornady Superformance 150 SST! First time I shot it, it shot 2 different sub 2" groups at 200. The better of the two was 1.12". I might get more out of handloading, but this is strictly a hunting rifle and I like the velocity of the Superformance line. I will chrono next time I take it to the range.

I don't know about the hunting part. I kill deer but all the tech has never been much of an issue there. If you're gonna shoot long range (such as 600 yard F-Class FT/R competitions or something, you're choices are .308 and .223. If you're gonna hunt deer .223 is pretty much out (Not really but we don't want to offend the 300 win mag crowd. You can kill a white tail with a .22 rf if you can shoot). Any way that leaves .308. If you get a .308 just make sure your stock is bedded and your barrel is floated. Good luck. Enjoy

I didnt read the orginal post as wanting to shoot at comps, i read it to mean a hunting rifle that he would shoot some times for fun at long distance. IF competition is what the orginal poster is wanting to do then Suberjc and the other would be correct about caliber choice.

Re: Budget Remington 700 build
Well I finally go to shoot it but only at 50 yds it took 3 rounds to get it where I wanted it.
The recoil is nice I'm only bleeding from the forehead a little lol

You'll love the 7 mag. I have one too and the .338 is fun too. I will sit and shoot 50 during a range session and have no problems. have fun with it and if you get into reloading you'll probably love that too.

Re: Budget Remington 700 build
Ok I have a newbie question
What is the proper form for shooting? (prone and table)
The only way I can be stable and accurate is to be really loose.
So everytime I fire the scope hits my forehead it's not bad but it gets sore.
How do you fire stable and still control the recoil ?
