Mossberg 144 LSB

Can anyone tell me anything about this rifle? I see some for sale, but can't find any history. I found one (new, in the box, still) at a store this weekend. Asking price was $599.00 -- no budging.

How do these compare to the Kimbers I see in the rimfire F-class?

I picked-up a M144 and M44 a few weeks ago at CMP ... no sights. The 144 Looked like a very well made target rifle; however, only kept it a couple days and sold it to a buddy of mine who is somewhat of a Mossberg collector. I have read that this was Mossberg's attempt to field a "true" target .22 and many say they are outstanding performers. I just do not know.

Our club has 144's. They are 1/2" rifles at 100 yards with 5 shots off the bench, with peep sights and Eley Tenex ammo.
