What Happened Here?? -- ANSWER!!

Picked this case up at the range this morning ... Can you guess what happened??

LOl fire formed to a new cartridge

looks like it was fired inside a gun who's chamber was too short for the cartridge.

What does the headstamp say the cartridge is? It may have been a 6.5x284 fired in a .284 chamber??? The picture leads me to believe it's a rebated rim case. Don't know though. A little more info is in order. Please! Pretty please.

I'd guess that it's something like a .223 or 5.56 fired in a larger caliber upper.

Think It's bigger than a 5.56 maybe a 308 or 06 shot out of a ultra mag ?

Whats stamped on the base?

A neck'd cartridge shot out of a non-neck breech.

Looks like a .223 to me that got resized!

it looks to me like the case is still too straight to have been necked, and the splits are all twisted like the rifling would be... that's what makes me think it was somehow fired in a chamber that wasn't long enough, but nearly the right size.

im still sticking to failed fire forming attempted.. but with out knowing the headstamp i cant say. I still think thats the formation of a shoulder about half way into the split..

Maybe it fired out of battery?

243 shot in a 270 rifle.......

.243win fired in a .25-06 or a chamber that was close to the length of a -06 but not as big as the .308 dia. so maybe a .25-06 or .270
