New Toy Ruger MKII .220 Swift

Post by philly60 on Thu Nov 03, 2011 11:34 am

Guys, I just got a really good deal on a Ruger MKII in .220 Swift & has a really low round count. Any of ya'll dabble in 220 swift? If so, any comments, suggestions or public floggings over this caliber would be greatly appreciated. I'll try to get some pics up tonight. Any reloaders in this caliber, your comments would be appreciated also, I may be in the wrong section for that though no .

i had a model 70 pre64 in this. Fun caliber, overbore for certain.
I have dies and a good supply of once fired norma brass for it.
might would sale it for a good price if your interested.
I used mine for shooting birds on fish ponds, in calm conditions its like a laser. I will also try and located my load notes on it. reloading room is a bit chaotic right now just moved into new house and havent got everything accounted for.

I have some once fired brass from a rifle I sold a few years back, not much, maybe 50 or so... Let me know if you want make a trade or something...

The round is RIDICULOUS fast and flat but take your time between shots and keep her clean!

Congrats on the rifle!

ftsibley, once you get settled I'd definetly work something out with you on the dies and brass. haven't had a chance yet to put the rifle on paper, but hopefully I can this weekend. Since you have owned a 220, how was your barrel life?

Dad had one when I was growing up.. We used to shoot every thing we owned at a 3/4 piece of steel set up at 100yards..Everything from 30-06 on down and the only bullet that ever went through that steel was the 220 swift. Looked like a hot knife going through butter.. It flared both the entrance and exit hole.. It was unbelivable. My cousin now has one.. He shot a buck running away from him at 300 yards last year (don't ask my why). But the bullete entered the hind quarter and exit the chest deer was DRT..

arnygollott3, yes sir, I'll definitely work something out with you on the brass. How was your barrel life? I've been told to stay around the 50-55 gr bullets for the 220, I'm not wanting blazing speed but something that will reach out to 300-400 yards. Any certain powder that worked well for you? Thanks for yalls input.

I bought my Swift in 2004 or so and sold it about 2008 I think...

I owned it BEFORE I was into reloading so I had no experience with the round in reloading.

I put about 40-60 rounds down a Remington VSSF rifle over that time period! Factory Federal 40 grain ammo, still have a few rounds I think, we can work that into a deal too if you like...

Anyway, the gun and ammo shot about .8" groups and that was with the TRUE Swift ammo, stuff clocking 4200+ fps! I shot VERY SLOWLY.

I would recommend shooting 55+ grain bullets. 60-70 grains would be ideal but MOST factory guns do not have fast enough twist in their barrels to stabilize some of the heavier bullets.

I'll send you a PM about my 220 Swift brass and ammo and see what we can work out...

I can't really speak to that.. I am not sure if the one my cousin has now is the same one we shot growing up (but it is likely). If so that would have been about 30 years ago, but it has probably not been shot much at all... I think it might be an issue if you were going to shoot a 100 rounds a week out of it.. But as for me.. I may put a box of shells a year through my rifles.. Usually just sight it in and use it for deer/varmit hunting. I don't think it would be an issue in this type of use.
