Rim thickness?

Post by inthe10ring on Fri Nov 04, 2011 1:02 pm

I came across this video on youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqM-SHZlZjM&feature=related

Is there any truth to this? I've heard of weighing .22 ammo and actually have tried it. There is some variation in the weights of cartridges, but does the rim thickness affect the cartridge performance?

Read some about it; but have not convinced myself that is worth the time and trouble. My problem is that I have not yet got to the point that "I" can shoot as well as the ammo I am currently using. When I get to the point when I can take the "I" out of the equation, I might give it a try.

Weighing does seem to have a potential. Have read that most of the SERIOUS 22 competitors do this ... in their attempt to find that 1 or 2 light rounds ....

22lr benchrest shooters measure the rims and group their ammo, from what I have read they get better groups with same sized rims. I'm not serious about it enough to go to the trouble of measuring the rim thickness.

Paco Kelly sells the tools to measure rims, trim bullets and reshape the bullets on .22s.

Cant you use a .243 case to put the 22 ammo in for a poor mans rim thickness tool?

I ran off in that hole one time, don't really think it is worth the effort. I actually built a guage that was much more accurate than sticking them in a 243 hull.

If you want something to mess with try the concentricity thing and see how that works out. I lost access to the machine shop before I got a chance to build one of those.

This is a left over from 15-20 years ago when the ammo was crap.

I've been looking pretty hard at it and from my research have decided it aint worth the time and effort

and if it was...I would not say so here...cause beatin jbpmidas just one time in 22 F class is on my bucket list....

I'll say this much....Yogi Berra (baseball legend) for you young fellas....once said "90% of the game is half mental"

So if it makes you feel good to check your rims and weigh em.....then you go man and I wish you well....

Just aint worth it to me...But I aint gonna just out right poo poo on it either...

I got lots of work left to do on my game before I get ever get to that....including some gunsmithing...so this is way way way down on things to try and by that time centerfire F class will be here again

I have not shot a 22 round since June or so.....if my form 4 would ever come in...I'd probably be motivated....but now its time to "hang meat".

Big Toys turn me on more.....what can I say IDK

We shot Wednesday morning for the first time since August 4. I could tell it had been a while. That's why we wanted to shoot early in the month so we would have time to warm up. I shoot Eley Black box and do not sort ammo in any way. My best so far is a 597. Would sorting get me three more points? I don't know. What I do know is I need to spend the time learning to read conditions. I did try weighing Wolf Match Extra and found no difference.

Man it would be so ez to drop 3 because of wind changing it aint even funny

course most postals I'm betting are in near zero wind conditions and early am before mirage is a factor...but it would not take much

I always seem to have one WTF ? shot in every group of 10....then again I aint gone over to the dark side on the ultra high $ ammo yet either

When we tested ammo, Tenex was the hands down best! It would group 10 into .25" at 50 yards. Black Box would do about .50" or a little under. Tenex is just a little too expensive. I may try some for the State Match in the spring.

Try a fired 223 case and a micrometer, it works very well. I'm amazed at the weight and rim thickness consistancy of today's better grades of ammo.

This was something that was done about ten year's ago and the high in ammo maker's (Eley, Lapua, RWS and SK) tighten up on their spec's on rim thickness when making this ammo, so if this ammo is used there is no need to check the rim thickness as it run's great. But now the cheaper ammo is a different story. Eley's ammo rim thickness run's around .037 to .040, and the other's stay in the .040 to .042 thickness, The rim thickness and the headspace need's to be matched up for good accuracy if everthing else is right. We shoot alot Benchrest and the ammo I mentioned will shoot group's down in the low.200's and mid to high .100's, and that's Eley Tenex, Match and Team ammo. But it costly ammo, YBRF Rambo
