New to Custom Guns
Alright, I admit I am a little nervous sending so much (to me) money and my rifle to be torn apart and put back together again. I am comforted, somewhat, by Alton's resume! Anybody got a breakdown on how many of his rifles were at the state match and how they fared? I know his F-T/R rifle won both MS and LA state matches. It's still nerve wracking though. Putting money into the rifle puts the pressure squarely on my shoulders. I've got to start over on load development, not that I was anywhere near complete on the rifle to begin with. Then, I've got to practice, practice, practice!
Anyway, the point of the thread is to hear your favorite personal gunsmith experiences or your personal horror stories.

No doubt you are in good hands with Alton, he does every rifle like it is his own. I've worked with him and known and shot with him for years. I think the top 3 in Open were his builds.

Re: New to Custom Guns
I've got a horror story in the making right now. When I was just a kid I had a part time job in a hardware store. We took a old Ruger 10/22 in on trade and I started saving my money to buy it. One day I came in for work and it was gone. My mom and dad had bought it for me for christmas. Last year I started re doing the stock and duracoated the reciever and everything else but the barrel was in rough shape so I went on rimfire central and found a guy who would rework and reblue it. That was in January and it's still up there. I can't get the guy to reply and it's not sitting too well with me. Of course he was paid up front. The guy was going thru some problems but that was in march. I'm planning on having my barrel back if it means getting in my car and driving to the guys house. He lives a long way off. The guy in question really does have quite a following on RFC but so far I'm not impressed. Be careful who and where you ship your stuff to cause it's not working out for me right now.

I've got a 10/22 that was bought for me when I was VERY young. I dropped it off at Tupelo Custom Weaponry to be Cerakoted. I was more than a little nervous about that as well. It came back perfect! I hope your 10/22 ends up the same!

As with anything else these days you need to check the people out that you will be dealing with. I would want to talk on the phone a bit with the person or if the shop is close enough to be able to visit in person. My gunsmith lives about an hour away and is alway reachable by phone, that is at times quite reassuring.
I dont know Alton, but based on his contributions to this site, his shooting accomplishments, and information on the website, i wouldnt think twice about sending him any of my guns to be worked on.
The rifles that he has shown on here are works of art, and his shooting abitlites seem to validate his gunsmithing abilities.
I suspect that you will be more than pleased when the project is finished.
OH, by the way custom rifles are addictive as hell, so be warned.

Re: New to Custom Guns
I could bore you with a horror story or so...but I won't
I will say that you might as well go get a 2nd or 3rd job to feed the addiction....
accuracy is like crack....get a good hit and well you know....
You are fortunate that you have met your gunsmith face to face and have shot with him. He knows what you want better than you do...
His reputation speaks for itself...we are lucky to be able to call him friend...
You'll love your new gun when its done...
Don't worry be happy...
Go practice up on a few whitetails

Re: New to Custom Guns
I have been screwed in the past and will not do business with any gunsmith or other business person who ask to be paid up front. Alarm bells going off..
Any well known smith will protect his/her reputation at all cost. If someone is an up and coming talent..and does not have the cash to cover their overhead from one job to the next they wont be in business long for one reason or another. Does Brownells deliver parts before they receive payment?

Sorry to hear that rdinak...I've had some close calls on handguns at times..
I'm fairly sure I was pretty much a trail blazer for Dixie Precision Rifles...blazin trails is kinda my style...
One trip to their shop to look at what Alton and Co has at his disposal and viewing just a few of his rifles you knew it was quality all the way...I never lost a min of sleep cept for wondering when my new toys were gonna be done
Its a shame that you have had a bad experience in the past...I don't think anyone would last very long if they got a bad reputation with us on MSGO
we are real lucky to have some good en's in the area

Ive got a couple factory barrels laying around if you need one.
Ive never heard a single complaint about Alton. And got to see some of his work and its amazing.
You stocked up on reloading components yet? Your gonna need'em cause the addiction never goes away.
